The Woman’s Club of Seal Beach recently hosted a presentation for their members, friends and parents of the winners from the annual J. H. McGaugh Elementary School Poetry Contest.
Their poetry was astounding because of the creativeness.
A program that lasts all year, students are writing poetry every week. Some are thoughtful and some are sad, some are comedic. They are thoughtful and all are insightful.
The club members who attended were happy to have had the opportunity to listen to these poets.
Below are two of the winning poems.
My Life As A Cupcake
By Nico Muench-Casanova
They put me in the oven to bake.
Me a sad and miserable cake.
Feeling the heat I started to bubble.
Watching the others I knew I was in trouble.
They opened the door and I started my life.
Frosting me with a silver knife.
Decorating me with candy jewels
The rest of my batch looked like fools.
Lifting me up, she took off my wrapper.
Feeling the breeze, I wanted to slap her.
Opening her mouth with shiny teeth inside.
This was the day that cupcake had died.
Rumors
By Kylie Goldman
They creep up on you
behind your back you don’t even know it’s happening until crash
it shatters your heart
into little pieces
as you try to say
NO
it’s NOT true
more recreated stories
come back
this time
it spreads
and intensifies
as it travels
from person to person
lies always find a way
to reappear
why—would they believe it?
