Its a rite of the season, a sign that winter has come to Mayberry by the Sea.

Seal Beach will commence construction of the annual winter sand berm on Monday, Nov. 4, and is expected to take two to three weeks to complete.

Post Earthworks Constructors will build the berm.

The project protects beachfront homes from potential flooding. The berm usually acomplishes this task, though an unusual ocean surge in 2010 overwhelmed the sand berm that year.

This fall, the city will concurrently perform “back-passing,” a process of transferring beach sand from the west side of the Seal Beach Pier to the east side of the pier.

This process is performed periodically due to “wave run-up,” the natural transportation of sand from the east beach to the west beach.

The contractor will stage their equipment in the 10th Street beach parking lot.

Public Works will have a portion of the parking lot coned off for them on Nov. 4, in preparation for the work. Portions of the beach will be closed while the work is being performed.

In 2010, the sand berm cost Seal Beach about $1 million to build.
