Beach Fitness and Hennesey’s Tavern on Main Street in Seal Beach just finished a fundraising partnership to benefit breast cancer research: Barbells for Boobs. The event, which took place last Saturday at 8 a.m. down at the 10th Street beach parking lot drew more than 100 competitors and another 150 or so spectators, supporters and staff. They packed out the restaurant after the competition.
The benchmark workout or WOD (workout of the day) is deceptively simple, 30 ground to overhead lifts for time, better known as “Grace.” The Prescription weight is 135 pounds for men and 95 poiunds for women. The winning time was 1 minute 27 seconds from Jason Jamison from Crossfit Modern.
Bryce Turner, co-owner of Beach Fitness feels strongly about the event. “We have been involved with Team Spirit in Long Beach for 10 years, partnered with Barbells for Boobs for the last three years, and my mother Lorraine is a survivor, as is one of the other owner’s mom, Marcia Brashier.”
Hennessey’s has also a strong tradition of working on behalf of several charities, including St. Baldrick’s and other cancer support network events.
Mike Heib, who helped supervise the guest bartender portion of the event later Saturday night said: “We are a strong local advocate for our community and love partnering with businesses like Beach Fitness and Barbells for Boobs.” Combined, Hennessey’s, Beach Fitness and the actual event raised more than $3,500 in donations, participation and contributions.
Special shout out goes to Crossfit Los Alamitos, Crossfit Modern & Crossfit Shield for all coming out and supporting Crossfit Seal Beach. Also, the event wouldn’t have been nearly as successful without the support of the Delta Gamma sorority chapter of Cal State Long Beach – “Go Beach!”
