Steven Castro, Brian Joseph and William Chenoweth of Troop 642 in Seal Beach were recognized for their achievements at an Eagle Court of Honor held at Rush Park Auditorium in Rossmoor on Sunday, August 14.
All three Eagle scouts graduated in June 2011 from Los Alamitos High School and are now headed to college. While at Los Alamitos High School, each had also participated in the cross country and track teams and other extra-curricular programs. Each of the scouts culminated his journey along the Boy Scout path by choosing and leading a community service project.
Castro’s project benefited the Voluntary Services Center at the Long Beach Veterans’ Affairs Hospital. Steven designed, obtained materials for, and supervised construction of an 8-foot storage cabinet built to hold games and bingo equipment used as therapy and entertainment for the veterans. Steven obtained over $1,800 in materials and monetary donations, and he and his volunteers put 387 hours into the planning and construction of the cabinet.
Joseph’s project also benefited the Long Beach Veterans’ Affairs Hospital. He led a team of volunteers in the design, construction and installation of a cabinet to hold over 1500 DVDs and CDs that are used for entertainment by the hospital patients. Brian raised $480 for the project, and he and his team worked for over 330 hours to plan and build the storage unit.
Chenweth’s project took place at El Dorado Park, Long Beach, California. He and his crew of volunteers devised and laid out an orienteering course where scouts and others can practice their compass and distance-pacing skills. The Parks and Recreation Department of Long Beach, in particular Mr. Bill Greco, gave William valuable advice and assistance. He was also assisted in the project with generous donations, from Ganahl Lumber and Amecis Pizza.
