Taco Surf calls for amplified music

The owner of Taco Surf on Main Street Seal Beach has asked the City Council to change the zoning code to allow amplified live entertainment.

The City Council on Monday, May 11, voted unanimously to have staff draft a plan to permit amplified music at local businesses on a case-by-case basis.

Mayor Ellery Deaton said she wanted a process that would allow the city to shut down the music without closing a business.

District Two Councilman David Sloan said he wanted a way to control the sound. Local attorney Scott Levitt, representing Taco Surf, suggested an over-the-counter permit that would be easier for a business to obtain but also easier for the city to revoke than conditional use permits.

So-called CUPs run with the land, meaning the permit continues even when the property changes hands. The Seal Beach municipal code does not currently allow amplified music.

The issue will next go before the Planning Commisssion.
