School district gets good grades

Ninety-four percent of Los Alamitos Unified School District students ranked “proficient or advanced” in the English-language arts on 2012 California Standardized Tests, according to the state Department of Education.

The figure represents 94 percent of 7,102 district students in grades two thru 11. In all, 7,324 students were tested and scored in various subjects. There were 7,355 students enrolled in the district on the first day of testing.

“The CSTs for English-language arts, mathematics, science and history-social science are administered only to students in California public schools,” according to the Department of Education website.

Business improves

The business scene showed small signs of improvement in mid-September, when a new PetSmart became one of three new businesses to open in the former Stats location in the Shops at Rossmoor (which is actually a Seal Beach shopping center). PetSmart was originally going to build a larger store on the former location of the Albertson’s supermarket in the Shops at Rossmoor (in Seal Beach). However, the recession forced PetSmart to scale back its plans and to postpone opening a store at all.

Seth Eaker named grand marshal

The Chamber named Seth Eaker as grand marshal for the 2012 Christmas Parade. Eaker has been active in countless fundraising events and community organizations since he moved to Seal Beach a decade ago. It wasn’t the first honor Eaker received this year, as he had also been named the Chamber’s businessman of the year. A member of the DWP Advisory Committee, Eaker cast the sole dissenting vote in favor of the Bay City Partners’ Ocean Place project.
