Stylish Solutions: Have your hair trimmed while it grows out

Dear Lisa,

I recently had my hair cut and I really do not like it.

I had shoulder length hair and had about 3 inches cut off into a bob type of style.

Is there anything I can do that would make my hair grow quicker?

Thanks,

Monica Kelly

Hi Monica,

Well, it’s a change and sometimes we just do not feel comfortable with the result of change.

At least you have tried it, so enjoy the new cut while you are growing your hair out.

Hair grows on average half inch to an inch per month, depending on the individual. I would advise you to have a regular trim every 10-12 weeks to ensure you keep your hair healthy while you it grows.

The secret to healthy hair is to eat a good diet that is high in protein, with lots of fresh veggies and fruit, keep your scalp clean and make sure you care for your hair to prevent any type of damage.

I would make sure to deep condition the mid-lengths and ends to maintain your hair in good condition. You should also use a protector from any heat you may use on your hair while styling it.

This will help in making sure when your hair grows it will be healthy and shiny.

Good Luck,

Lisa

Don’t sleep with a ponytail

Hi Lisa,

I have long hair and when I go to sleep I tie it up in a ponytail.

I have noticed shorter pieces around my hairline and they were not cut like the rest.

I was wondering: Does this damage your hair?

Dear Kelly,

A better option for you is to put your hair up in a loose knot (bun) or braid your hair and tie it with a loose ribbon or something soft that won’t pull on your hair and cause friction.

Tying your hair up in a ponytail while sleeping can actually damage the hair, especially if you toss and turn a lot while sleeping.

Also, depending on how fine your hair texture is, in the morning you may see the marks that a band can make on your hair.

Sometimes, if it is too tight it could damage the hair and cause it to eventually have shorter pieces and normally it will show first around the hairline.

Thanks,

Lisa
