Seal Beach Police Explorers graduate and head to college careers

The Seal Beach Police Department recently congratulated six Police Explorers who have made outstanding contributions to the city.  The Explorers are all graduating from Los Alamitos with more than over 100 hours each of volunteer time to the program and were recognized in a headquarters ceremony on June 27.

“We are very proud of our recent graduates who have demonstrated leadership and have represented the Seal Beach Explorer Program with outstanding dedication and service,” said Officer Michael Henderson, explorer advisor.  “We wish them well.”

These exemplary men and women are:

•    Charlie Crampton of Rossmoor – Cal State University Long Beach, Pre-Criminal Law.

•    Zachariah Goulhiane of Whittier – University of California at Santa Barbara, Political Science.

•    Matthew Henney of Los Alamitos – Golden West College, Liberal Studies.

•    Chad Kumabe of Seal Beach – University of the Pacific, Civil Engineering.

•    Daniel Lever of Seal Beach – Cal State University Fullerton, Public Administration.

•    Kaylee Shippert of Cypress – Brigham Young University (Idaho), Psychology.

Los Alamitos High School requires all students to have fulfilled volunteer hours prior to graduating.  The Seal Beach Police Department Police Explorer Program satisfies this by being a worksite-based program that is part of Learning-for-Life’s Career Education Program, under the umbrella of The Boy Scouts of America.  Open to teens ages 14 to 19, the purpose of the Explorer Program is to provide experiences that help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.  The program is based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience.  Teens enter the Explorer Program knowing that it is a progressive program built on earning trust.

Explorers are given the opportunity to participate in a one-week, intensive, mock police academy where they learn about subjects including; First Aid/CPR, radio procedures, ethics, DUI enforcement, traffic, narcotics, domestic violence, and police tactics.  There is also a heavy emphasis on physical training.  This Explorer academy is facilitated by the Orange County Law Enforcement Explorer Advisors Association (OCLEEAA).  After completing the academy (and not all do), Explorers earn the privilege of being able to wear a uniform and ride-along with Police Officers and observe them performing their duties.

All six of the SBPD Explorer graduates successfully completed this academy and went on to “pay back” the community by providing hundreds of volunteer hours for a variety of community events, including: the Seal Beach Christmas Parade; the Seal Beach 5k/10k; the Seal Beach Car Show; and the West County Community Emergency Response Team.
