The Seal Beach Lions Club’s Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 7 was another success story for the service group with one of the longest histories of community involvement in the city.
The event, held at the Bixby Golf Course in Long Beach Raised more than $6,000 for Lions charity work on behalf of sight challenged and blind people – many who have no access to quality medical care.
“After expenses, it was our most successful tournament yet,” said Grant Newton, the co-chairman of the event with Diana Brunjes.
Newton, a Seal Beach native, virtually grew up learning the ropes of serving the community and beyond through his association with the Seal Beach Leos Club – the youth arm of the local Lions and lately as an active member of the Seal Beach Lions Club.
He follows in the footsteps of his father, Scott Newton, who has been a major force in the local Lions for more than a quarter century and his mother Mary Newton, who was a key figure as a member of the now defunct Seal Beach Lioness Club.
This year’s Charity Golf Tournament drew 65 golfers competing in various competitions, including a blindfolded putting contest, which was administered by members of the Miss Seal Beach Court; a Longest Drive contest, a raffle and awards for the first, second and third place teams. In addition, there were about 20 key volunteer who help make the day a success.
Various sponsors help make the day a success including Baytown Realty, Republic Services, DOGZ Bar and Grill, Beachwood BBQ, and of course, the Seal Beach Lions Club. Following the action on the golf course, the event adjourned to the Mary Wilson Library Senior Center in Old Town Seal Beach. Amid a smorgasbord of food and refreshments, leaders of the club shared longtime memories, kudos to members’ service, plans for the future growth of the club and appreciation to everyone who helped make the day a success by participating in it and dedicating a portion of the weekend to the community service appreciation.
