Background:
On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at about 8:31 am, Seal Beach police officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Ocean Avenue in the City of Seal Beach regarding an unknown trouble call at the residence.
An out of state relative called police dispatch to report that their brother was frustrated with providing care for his mother. Officers arrived and were unable to contact anyone inside the residence. Officers found an unlocked door and made entry to conduct a welfare check. Once inside, officers found two deceased adults.
During the investigation, including interviews with relatives and an autopsy conducted by the Orange County Coroner’s Office,
Seal Beach detectives learned that the adult son, 65, was living with his mother, 84, in the Seal Beach residence. The mother had recently suffered a temporary medical condition that required constant attention and care. Family members were in the process of establishing in-home care and had arranged for her son to care for her in the interim.
On December 27, 2023, an out of state relative received several phone calls from the son in which he expressed increasing frustration with his inability to care for his mother’s condition. During the third and final phone call, the relative heard a loud bang and the son indicated that his mother was “gone”.
Upon arrival, officers found the mother and the son lying on a bed, both with fatal gunshot wounds to the head. A firearm was located in the son’s hand.
