The Seal Beach Boardriders Surf Club has announced the recipients of its inaugural scholarship program, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s commitment to supporting the local surfing community. This year, the club is awarding two scholarships to deserving individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the sport of surfing and have ambitious goals for their future endeavors.
The first scholarship recipient is Hamilton Zahn, a passionate surfer and aspiring marine biology researcher currently pursuing his studies at Oregon State University. Despite being away for school, Zahn remains deeply connected to his roots in Seal Beach and plans to return home for the summer to continue his work as a local lifeguard. The scholarship funds will undoubtedly alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with his education and allow him to focus on both his academic pursuits and his commitment to serving the community.
The second scholarship has been awarded to Rachel Wilson. Hailing from Virginia Beach, Wilson has been an integral part of the local surfing scene, dedicating her time to instructing at the Chas Surf School. While actively competing in World Surf League events at the Qualifying Series level, Wilson’s passion and determination are truly undeniable. The financial support provided by the scholarship will aid her in covering travel expenses and competition fees, easing her competitive pursuits. Additionally, the funds will assist her in balancing her rigorous training schedule with summer online courses at a local community college, furthering her academic and professional aspirations.
The Seal Beach Boardriders is proud to invest in the future of surfing by empowering talented individuals like Hamilton Zahn and Rachel Wilson. These scholarships not only recognize their achievements but also serve as a testament to the club’s dedication to fostering talent and fostering a vibrant surfing community. As these young surfers embark on their respective journeys, they carry with them the support and encouragement of the entire Seal Beach community.
“Seal Beach Boardriders looks for opportunities to promote a culture of leadership, and offer programs to foster character development for club members beyond the skills honed for surfing competition, said SBB Treasurer Scott Meyer. “Our club includes many members who’ve advanced their stations in life through education, including: first responder academies (police, fire, paramedic, etc.), bachelors, masters and doctoral programs. We are fortunate to have great financial support from our membership and club sponsors that make it possible for us to contribute toward the academic ambitions of our current scholar athletes. It is with great appreciation for their aspirations, that we offer these inaugural scholarships to these club members and look forward to the possibility of granting scholarships annually in the future.”
