On March 16 Seal Beach will come alive with the celebration of Run Seal Beach’s 50th anniversary. This family-friendly event, featuring a 1K Kids Fun Run, a 5K Run/Walk, and 10K Run, has been a staple in the community. This year’s edition promises something special—a new 10K course extending onto the Naval Weapons Station.
Run Seal Beach has been more than just a race; it’s a testament to the community’s spirit of togetherness. The event brings together teams from local schools such as Oak and McAullife, families honoring other family members, serious runners, and leisurely walkers. As a 100% volunteer-run organization, the success of the event is owed to the dedication of those who generously contribute their time and energy.
According to longtime Board member Tim Mosa, “The success of the event is dependent upon our volunteers. We couldn’t do it without them as our board of directors is less than 10 people. Our volunteers help us with packet pick up, course control, water stops, and so much more.”
Volunteers, who play a crucial role in the seamless execution of the event, are always welcomed, and interested individuals can easily sign up on the Run Seal Beach website.
Beyond the thrill of the run, Run Seal Beach has been a beacon of community support, contributing over $2,000,000 to the local community since its transformation into a non-profit in 2003. Last year alone, more than 60 grants were awarded, benefitting community organizations, City of Seal Beach programs, and school-related initiatives.
Crucial to the event’s success is its collaboration with the City of Seal Beach and local businesses. Longstanding sponsors, such as the Bernadett Family, are not just contributors but essential partners, enabling Run Seal Beach to fulfill its mission.
“Without our sponsors, we could not fulfill our mission of promoting health and fitness in a family-friendly event, supporting non-profit groups providing recreation, fitness, and leisure in our local community” Mosa emphasizes.
For 2024, the event is actively seeking sponsors, and those interested can contact sponsorship@runsealbeach.com to be part of this impactful community event.
A Unique Course for Everyone
Each year the morning starts with the Kids Fun Run for children ages 3-10. This non-competitive run is a chance for kids to get a taste of the excitement of running in a community event. At the end of the run is the Fun Zone with a range of fun activities to engage children while their parents participate in the main event.
This year’s race introduces a new 10K course, venturing onto the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station —a throwback to pre-2002 routes. Excitement surrounds this collaboration, providing participants with a unique opportunity to run through the military base.
“It’s a unique opportunity to see the base. We’re excited to partner with the Naval Weapons Station as an important part of our community,” Tim Mosa shared. Not only is the new course for the runners, but it reduces the impact on the community by eliminating the need to close PCH on race morning.
If you’re not up to a 10k then the 5k distance may be for you. Runners and walkers participate on a scenic course through Old Town Seal Beach and finish at the iconic Pier.
“We encourage people near and far to participate. After all, you register, you participate, we give back,” Tim Mosa states. Last year’s race featured participants from Canada, London, and 21 states.
In its 50th year, Run Seal Beach continues to be a symbol of community engagement, promoting health, fitness, and the spirit of giving back. As March 16 approaches, organizers invite everyone to be part of the “little run with a big heart” that is Run Seal Beach. Join the celebration and contribute to the legacy of fitness, fun, and community impact.
