Ruby’s Diner has stood at the end of the Seal Beach Pier for more than a quarter century. The restaurant chain leases the space on the pier from the city.
However, the restaurant chain will rent the space on a month-to-month basis while city officials negotiate a new lease with the chain.
The current lease between the owners and the city of Seal Beach expired Oct. 31.
On that same day, City Manager Jill Ingram sent a letter to the Ruby’s Restaurant Group proposing that the space be rented on a monthly basis until a new lease agreement is reached.
On Nov. 13, the Seal Beach City Council ratified Ingram’s agreement with the restaurant group.
“The most recent lease was executed on September 23, 2002, and expired on October 31, 2012,” said a staff report by Assistant City Manager Sean Crumby.
The operator of the Seal Beach Ruby’s, Art Haack, has been talking with city staff about a new lease agreement.
According to Crumby’s report, if Ruby’s owners and the city can’t reach an agreement, either the city or Ruby’s may end the business relationship by giving 30 days written notice to terminate the agreement.
