Rossmoor stabbing defendant pleads not guilty

The defendant in the Rossmoor jogger stabbing pleaded not guilty to all charges at his arraignment on Monday, Nov. 5.

According to the Orange County Sherrif’s Department, James Anthony Rivas, 18, a Rossmoor resident, is currently in custody in the Orange County Jail. Bail has been set at $1 million.

According to the Orange County Superior Court website, Rivas has been charged with attempted murder, an “enhancement” of premeditated attempted murder, an enhancement of inflicting great bodily harm, assault with a deadly weapon other than a gun, mayhem and second degree armed robbery.

On Monday, Rivas officially pleaded not guilty to the charges and denied the enhancements.

The stabbing took place at about 9:11 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, on the 3200 block of Bostonian Drive in the unincorporated community of Rossmoor. The suspect grabbed the 28-year-old woman from behind.

The woman, whose identity has not been made public, was treated at a hospital and released.

The robbery charge contradicts a statement made to the press by Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino that the victim told investigators her assailant did not attempt to rob her. At the time.
