James Merrifield, who has been the manager of the Sprouts store in Seal Beach for the past few years, worked his way into the hearts of the community he got to know and especially his co-workers.

He has been described by fellow Sprouts employees as “beloved” for his patience, humor and example to younger people he trained and whose job performance he oversaw.

One of Merrifield’s favorite things to do was to throw a Team Member Appreciation barbecue where he was happiest with a metal spatula hand, cooking up some chicken on the grill, surrounded by the people who had become his friends.

On April 4, Merrifield was reassigned to a new location with Sprouts Farmers Market. However, he did not leave before holding one more barbecue.

There was a large turnout for the team from store 208 that goes by the name “All Sports.”

There was chicken and burgers enough for everyone and they had a D.J. come and play music for all to enjoy. All employees were encouraged to bring their family members as well and they held an opportunity drawing for $500 in prizes.

“It was my absolute pleasure giving thanks to the people that have heavily contributed to our happy home and successful operation,” Merrifield said. “At this time I would like to give a very special thank you to the men and women here at Sprouts Farmers Market in the Shops at Rossmoor (in Seal Beach) and thank them for all of their hard work and dedication in making this store a successful landmark here in the Rossmoor and Seal Beach community. Together we have made big strides in bettering our business and continue to work very hard in order to create a positive shopping experience for our customers. They are all extended members of my family and will be greatly missed.

Merrifield said customers often told him the location is a great place to shop and that we have done a fantastic job in our day-to-day operation and overall structure.

“My response is always the same, as I am always sure to give thanks and in reply state that I am only the coach, and these employees are my players that are making it happen for this community,” he said. “I would also like to thank and say goodbye to all of our loyal customers here in Rossmoor, Leisure World, Seal Beach, Cypress, Long Beach, Westminster, Garden Grove, and Lakewood. I have made so many friends here since my arrival in early 2010. You all will be greatly missed. Best of luck to all of you.”
