Opinion: A view from the Harbour

Lara Anderson

I look forward to the Sun every Thursday as we don’t get any other local newspaper delivered gratis up here in North Huntington Beach. If you’re like me and wondering what’s going on in our neck of the coastline, well, twice a month, I’m going to do my best to share some Huntington Harbour area news with you.

A funny thing happened when I moved here last year … Dennis Kaiser’s face ended up on my driveway. Not the actual man himself, but his picture next to the familiar headline “Kaiser on a Roll.” I took it as a sign that perhaps Huntington Beach will eventually feel like home after all.

My husband and I decided 2013 was the ideal time to give Huntington Beach a try, so we leased out our home in Dana Point, found a house to rent in the Harbour, packed up the kids and dogs, and here we are. I wasn’t sure if we were going to stay … to say we were rooted in Dana Point is an understatement. I had just finished my second term as Mayor after serving 8 years on the Dana Point City Council.

That’s where Dennis’ face comes in. Sometime around 1997, when he was the editor of the Dana Point News, I wrote articles on my then-neighborhood, the Lantern Village, (which somehow snowballed into running for City Council, however, I have absolutely no intention of getting involved in Huntington Beach politics … although I probably once said the same thing about Dana Point!)

Apologies to my new neighbors if I seemed a bit reclusive, after being so public for so long, anonymity was a welcome change, but I’ve come to realize what I miss most about living in Dana Point is the people. I feel a strong sense of community exists here in the Harbour, and I’m happy we’ve officially decided to stay and become a part of it. If we haven’t met yet, I’m the one walking the dog that looks like Spuds or the Target dog, a loud Beagle, and two little girls on school days. On weekends you might see us cruising around the islands in an inflatable with a canopy.

I’m excited to learn about my new hometown and I hope you’ll help by letting me know about upcoming Harbour happenings.
