Seal Beach veterans groups to perform annual Memorial Day ceremonies

Seal Beach VFW Post 4048 and American Legion Post 857 will again perform the Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30, at Eisenhower Park just north of the Seal Beach Pier.

The United States National Submarine Memorial West, located at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, will also be the site of annual public Memorial Day services Monday, May 30. Both services start at 11 a.m.

Eisenhower Park Ceremony

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher is scheduled to speak at 11:20 a.m. Commander Eric Franzen is featured Guest Speaker from NWS Seal Beach. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Rowe will introduce the City of Seal Beach representatives District One Councilwoman Ellery Deaton and Police Chief Joe Stilinovich. Chaplain 1st Lt. Caroline Taylor from Caifornia State Military Reserve at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base will perform Chaplain Services.

The Young Marines will Post the colors. Los Alamitos High School “SoundFX” Grand National Show Choir winners at Nashville will perform the National Anthem and a few selected patriotic songs. VFW Post 4048 VSO Lester Shobe is the organizer. VFW Post 4048 Commander is Dan Whitney and Beverly Bonney is Commander of Seal Beach American Legion Post 857.

Weapons Station service

The Navy base observance will include the unique “tolling the boats” ceremony, during which the name of each of the 52 U.S. submarines lost during World War Two is read aloud, along with the fate of the crew, as a bell is tolled.  The guest speaker will be Cmdr. Kenneth Douglas, commanding officer of the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Pasadena.

The free event will be open to the public and is hosted by the Los Angeles-Pasadena Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. No advance reservations are needed.

The submarine memorial is located aboard the naval weapons station at 800 Seal Beach Boulevard, between Westminster Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, in the City of Seal Beach.
