Eisenhower Park
The annual Memorial Day ceremony in Old Town Seal Beach will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 30 at Eisenhower Park, to the right of the Seal Beach pier.
The pier is located at the end of Main Street on Ocean Avenue.
According to Bill Thomas of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, this year’s activities will feature more musical entertainment and fewer speakers.
The audience will enjoy relevant “sing-along” patriotic songs.
• Pre-Program Entertainment will be by Eddie Montana and Rob Roy
• The Presentation of Colors will be conducted by the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps.
• A POW/MIA service, and the placing of a Memorial Wreath.
• The Story of “TAPS” will be recited.
• Bugler plays the 24 notes of the heart-wrenching tune, TAPS.”
• Singing of patriotic songs will be led by Don Shoemaker.
• The two featured speakers will be Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, and Pastor Don Shoemaker of Grace Community Church of Seal Beach and a local police chaplin.
“Memorial Day is the day on which we remember and commemorate all the men and women who have served in the armed forces of America and have died in the service of our country,” Thomas said.
Naval Weapon Station
The United States National Submarine Memorial West, located at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, will be the site of annual public Memorial Day services Monday, May 30.
The 11 a.m. observance will include the emotional “tolling the boats” ceremony, during which the name of each of the 52 U.S. submarines lost during World War Two is read aloud, along with the fate of each crew, as a bell is tolled. The guest speaker will be Commander Brian W. Dickson, the Commanding Officer of the attack submarine USS Jefferson City (SSN 759).
The free event will be open to the public and is hosted by the Los Angeles Area “Diesel Boaters” Chapter of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II, and the Los Angeles-Pasadena Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.
The submarine memorial is located aboard the Naval Weapons Station at 800 Seal Beach Boulevard, between Westminster Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, in the City of Seal Beach.
