McGaugh Matters: The Pageant, books and autism awareness

Bill MacDonald

This week is Pageant of the Arts performance week. Our fourth and fifth grade student participants and McGaugh teachers have been working very hard to make this year’s 31st annual Pageant of the Arts a special event. Public performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20.

This year’s featured artist is Emily Kame Kngwarreye and her painting Emu Woman. I am looking forward to this exciting addition to the Pageant line up. Please join us for this incredible event, which showcases the McGaugh art program and the many talents of our amazing students.

April is World Autism Awareness Month and this Friday, April 19, McGaugh will be doing its part. Students, faculty and parents are encouraged to wear blue to school to spread awareness, compassion and support.

If you weren’t already aware, McGaugh hosts the regional autism classes for K, first, and second grade for the greater Anaheim SELPA. These classrooms add diversity and expertise to our campus and truly help all of us understand and value individual differences. Did you know that autism affects 1 in 88 children? Did you know that the number of school-age students on the autism spectrum is forecasted to rise by 133 percent in 2030? For more information about Autism, please visit www.autismspeaks.org.

Last but certainly not least, a big thank you to Lorie Tannourji and her team, the McGaugh Jesters, and McGaugh teachers Vanessa Uy and Kate Pekar for their efforts in making “Books for Bedtime” a tremendous success this year.

The event last Thursday was a great opportunity for families to acquire books at discount prices, enjoy an entertaining and educational program for children courtesy of the Jesters, and attend an excellent parent workshop on building reading comprehension at home. Thanks ladies—it was a fabulous night.
