The Marina Park expansion project will be the subject of two Seal Beach city workshops on Wednesday, April 20 and Wednesday April 27.
The city of Seal Beach is seeking $5 million in Prop. 84 grant funds to purchase land so the park can be expanded.
The April 20 workshop will be held during the scheduled Planning Commission meeting. The April 27 workshop will be held during the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting.
The plan the public will see at those workshops is the most popular of the proposals staff developed based on public responses to six previous workshops.
The seventh of the Marina Drive park project meetings was held in City Council Chambers on Wednesday, March 30. Staff presented the three plans at that meeting. Approximately 30 people attended, according to Sean Crumby, director of the Public Works Department.
Crumby said the community preferred “Plan C,” which called for a large swimming pool, an exercise pool, a community center, two play grounds, exercise station and some open space.
The plan also called for two half-sized basketball courts. However, the people who attended the March 30 meeting preferred one full-sized basket ball court.
According to a spread sheet devised by Bridgeport area resident Dr. Robert Goldberg, the main pool will be 7,382 square feet in size. The community pool at McGaugh Elementary is 4,855 square feet.
According to Goldberg, the proposed recreation or “exercise” pool would be 1,500 square feet. The smaller pool at McGaugh is 600 square feet.
According to Goldberg, the main pool at McGaugh has six lanes for swimming laps and a side wading area. The proposed pool could support as many as 15 lanes.
After the parks and planning commissions review the draft plan for Marina Park and take public comments, city staff will submit an application for Proposition 84 funds to complete the project.
