Coyote problem
My name is Marcella and my Chihuahua Tula was killed by a coyote recently in my gated garden here in Old Town.
City of Seal Beach has known about the coyote problem for some time now. Albeit fact that they have posted an “Urban Coyotes” page on their website, it simply references the “Hill” and the College Parks, with no mention of Old Town.
Its been suggested the theory that because of the Boulevard Bridge construction, coyotes have moved toward College Park East or West. Really?
Tula was eaten alive.
I rushed Tula to the after-hour emergency care facility and, very sadly, she did not pull through. All-Care Animal claims they see an average of five coyote cases each week from Seal Beach, with miniscule metrics on survival rate.
Should our leadership not be sharing this amongst all?
Please, please, for those of you with pets, big (or little, like Tula) or with children, or caring for the elderly, do realize that we have an enormous conundrum on our hands. Coyotes are not afraid of daylight. Coyotes are not afraid of people. Coyotes can scale a 14-foot fence. Coyotes will walk along walls in between your homes looking for animals or otherwise. Coyotes can kill. Coyotes do kill.
I simply wish to be in pursuit of creating awareness. This heartbreaking scenario is happening right here in Old Town yet we’ve had no communication from up-above of such. Our tight-knit community, full of forward thinking folks possessing intellect, brings me to this question:
What type of Leadership do we have here in Seal Beach if we are not watching out for one another, canines or otherwise? My lean-to is our Seal Beach Lions Club and our Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce. What are our official “City” people doing to remedy this obvious ongoing glitch in our system?
I, for one, would like to know. I’d bet Tula would, too.

Picnic tables
Here is the letter we sent to the Seal Beach Recreation and Parks Commission:
Dear Commissioners:
We understand that the Seal Beach City Council has asked the city’s Recreation and Parks Commission to look into the picnic tables on the beach.
Here is a little history of the table in front of our home in the 1600 block:
The picnic tables and volleyball court in the 1600 block of Seal Way have been here over 50 years providing recreation and seating to many Seal Beach residents and out of town groups.
People who walk their dogs, some elderly folks, fishermen and families needing a place to sit also use the picnic tables on the beach.
When a ship is in, Navy personnel enjoy sitting at the picnic tables. The residents have put out picnic tables and maintained them and the sand around them for many years. The city replaced the old wooden poles of the volleyball court with concrete and metal poles prior to the 1983 flood in Seal Beach. We have pictures of the day of the flood, which include a picture of the volleyball court under ocean water!
Currently the court and tables are used by two women’s volleyball groups, a “Moms” group, several men’s groups and mixed groups. The Los Alamitos High School freshman volleyball team has also used them on occasion.
There has never been a problem of any serious nature such as graffiti, carving, or destruction at this court or on the picnic tables.
To my knowledge there has not been a problem concerning this court or these tables.
With the city’s financial challenges, the people using the court have supplied the nets and ropes over the years understanding that anyone can come and use them. Property owners have maintained the picnic tables.
This summer, many people came down to the beach to play volleyball and sit at the picnic tables. If these are removed, could the city please put up a court(s) and picnic tables at this end of the beach like we have in other areas of Seal Beach? Thanks for your time and consideration.

Poll responses
The Sun website recently ran a poll asking, “Does the Seal Beach greenbelt need 40 new trees?”For the poll results, see this page. The following comments were posted at www.sunnews.org in response to the poll:
Enough trees
I (live) near the greenbelt and feel there are enough trees and more than enough leaves that fall from the trees. More trees more leaves. I would propose a small playground area.

More trees
Forty new trees over the 12 to 13 greenbelt block length is only approximately three trees per block. Some areas of the greenbelt could use more/new trees.
