Driftwood Luminary Night

The holidays will bring back the Driftwood Luminary Night starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, on Driftwood Avenue in Seal Beach.

The festive event is for the neighbors of Driftwood to join together and celebrate the holiday season.  At dusk, neighbors will place their luminary bags (small paper bags weighted with sand) with tea lights out along the curb in front of your home.  While participation with luminary bags is optional, everyone on Driftwood is encouraged (including guests) to park off-street the evening of Dec. 15.

Luminary bags can be any color, plain or decorated. The Driftwood Book Club will be hosting holiday treats at the following homes during the luminary festivities: 701 Driftwood, 715 Driftwood, 720 Driftwood, 815 Driftwood, 830 Driftwood, 840 Driftwood and, 910 Driftwood.

Great gifts for readers

Trying to figure out what to get that “hard to shop for” person this holiday season? The Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Library has some great ideas, especially for those who love to read.

Give a library tile and/or paver engraved with a loved one’s name. It supports the Library’s Community Front Porch Project and it is tax deductible.

On Dec. 6 and 7, shop online or at any Barnes and Noble and use the code 11145513 and part of the proceeds will go towards the Library’s Community Front Porch Project. (e-books are not eligible)

If you are planning on purchasing an eReader for someone or you know someone who has one, stop by the Library and pick up a bookmark that explains how to download eBooks for free from the Library’s website. The bookmarks make great stocking stuffers. Pick up a library application at the same time, for those who are not members.

Shop at the Friends of the Library bookstore.

Donations of new and nearly new books, dvd’s and magazines arrive daily.

The Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Library is located at 12700 Montecito Road in Seal Beach. For additional information please call 562-430-1048.

Assemblyman fights for fire pits at beaches

Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach) issued the following statement regarding the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) meeting discussing contracts to develop gas-fueled fire rings as an alternative to the nearly 800 wood-fueled fire rings currently being used in our local communities.

Any contracts approved by the committee will go before the full SCAQMD Board when they meet on Dec. 6.

“Californians support our wood burning fire rings, as they have for decades. Propane is not an acceptable alternative and presents its own potential dangers. The SCAQMD is overstepping its authority with this attempt to regulate a cherished California pastime.

“I introduced AB 1102, which will be heard in January, to stop this excessive type of regulation,” said Assemblyman Travis Allen.

The passage of AB 1102 will prohibit the SCAQMD from enacting the proposed regulations and save Southern California fire rings.
