Memorial walk for Sarah Krueger set for Aug. 19

On Friday, Aug. 11, a dear mom, wife and friend to the seal beach community was killed at PCH and 12th. Sarah Krueger leaves behind 3 beautiful children a husband,  many family members and friends.  A memorial walk is being organized for Saturday, Aug. 19 walking Sarah’s favorite route in her honor and to stand in support of adding a left hand turn arrow at the intersection she was killed. A huge petition is circulating with hundreds of signatures and stories of residents who have had close calls at the same intersection. (The link to the petition is www.change.org/p/everyone-left-turn-light-at-12-and-pch-in-seal-beach-california?recruiter=310845629& utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=share_petition&utm_term=autopublish.)

We want Sarah’s light! We cannot let a tragedy like this happen again. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at v.travis@icloud.com. Thank you! Below is a button we created to give out at the walk. Support Sarah’s Light!

Two points against new city developments

A big dark cloud in the form of proposed changes to development regulations in Long Beach looms over our little town. The Long Beach Planning Department is considering radically revising density and height guidelines for what they refer to as the 2nd Street and PCH Project. This is otherwise known as the Cerritos Wetlands and surrounding areas. The city of Seal Beach did submit comments on the environmental impacts of this proposal and I understand that the city will be represented at the Long Beach Planning Commission public hearing on this in early September.

It is my hope that many residents of Seal Beach will speak up against the proposal, but especially those in Old Town and the Hill who would be most adversely impacted. I offer the comments I have already submitted as an example and encourage everyone to comment both to the Long Beach Planning Department and to their Seal Beach council person.

My comments which follow were emailed in care of Craig Chalfant (Craig.Chalfant@longbeach.gov) of the city of Long Beach.

RE: The 2nd and PCH Project

I would like to submit the following comments to the Long Beach Planning Commission regarding revising the development guidelines for the area surrounding the Cerritos Wetlands. Thank you in advance for accepting my comments via email.

My comments are focused on the area along and near Pacific Coast Highway generally south from 2nd Street/Westminster Blvd to the San Gabriel River channel and the county line. This area is primarily commercial.

I would like to make two points.

First is the obviously negative impact on the quality of life that masses of 5-7 story structures along PCH would create. You can’t have the radical development changes you are considering without much more traffic, much more noise, and wider streets – all of which tend to splinter communities. Now for much of Long Beach that might not be such an issue because the area isn’t central to the city. But it clearly would radically affect the residents and businesses of Seal Beach, Naples, and the marina.

Second is that such development would be an uninviting eye sore. You have only to look at what a grim drive PCH has become with the massive intimidating developments south of Main Street in Huntington Beach. I don’t know anyone who enjoys that drive any more. Do you really want to isolate the marina? Or effectively wall off Naples? Or dwarf Seal Beach?

I urge you to seek an attractive and welcoming gateway into your city from Seal Beach. Why not look to your very own Belmont Shore as an example of a bustling business district that is a popular shopping and dining environment?
