How dare they
It appears to me that the DWP owners have a lot of chutzpah. They bought the land with full knowledge of the easement the city possessed in the extension of First St. to the city parking lot and cafe.
I believe this to be an easement in favor of the city. It has been an open and notorious use for decades.
Further, the DWP owners map on page one of the Sun shows the use in question as “Public Open Space.” Thus, is it public or not?
No one has addressed the issue of Ocean Ave. which runs through the DWP parcel. It will be recalled Ocean Ave. served as an approach to the bridge linking Seal Beach to Long Beach. Old photos of the DWP power plant shows this quite clearly. How and when did the city relinquish this property?
Perhaps our esteemed city attorney should look into the law of easements, particularly CC§ 1104. Will we expect him to justify a gift of public land to private use under a so called organic act?

Nasty and expensive election
Recently, Chuck Sylvia castigated me for a “smear campaign” because I disagreed with 4 specific Council actions. Then on Saturday Mr. Sylvia initiated his own smear campaign in an expensive, glossy color flyer that arrived Saturday in mailboxes all over town.
Mr. Sylvia has generously supported numerous worthy local causes for years. I don’t understand how he can so blithely tear the community apart with half-truths and lies funded with tens of thousands of dollars from our former trash hauler and his cronies.
But there is good news!
I came across LosAlTruth.com, a new Web site that seeks to fill in the omitted details in Los Al campaign flyers this year. I was impressed, even though it does compete with LetsFixLosAl.com, my own local Web site.
Check out LosAlTruth.com to the rest of the story on Mr. Sylvia’s expensive mailer.
And go to LetsFixLosAl.com to discuss all things Los Alamitos freely, with a post every Wednesday devoted to responses to News-Enterprise letters and articles.
But please try to keep it civil. We all love the same little town.

Other side of Emerson’s gripes
In response to Mr. Emerson’s letter in the Aug. 25 News-Enterprise, I would like to state he following facts.
Mr. Emerson stated that he would like to encourage the community to post their opinions of different community issues to use his blog. Mr. Emerson is a failed candidate from the last City Council elections.
First, Mr. Emerson stated that he was an independent in the last election. Mr. Emerson then became part of the failed Driscoll and parker coalition. His blog after the election became a propaganda machine for this failed coalition now led by Councilwoman Mejia, Mr. Kusumoto, and Mr. Sheridan.
The main respondents on this blog are J.M. Ivler, Emerson and (Art) DeBolt. Other people use this blog anonymously and are very cruel to other’s opinion.
I would like to discourage anyone who is not of their opinion from going on and writing on this blog. If you have the guts to disagree with Mr. Emerson and his group you will be subject to name-calling, and told that you are stupid or both.
That opinion will then be dissected until even the use of the word “the” comes into question. I have even seen where one gentleman’s opinions were blocked from this blog.
For example, last year the (Joint Forces Training) Base started a composting heap. All four of the majority on the Council were very much against this composting heap from the beginning except Councilwoman Mejia who thought if was great.
Councilmen Edgar, Zarkos and Stpehens went to great lengths to stop the composting before the stench started. When someone wrote on this blog about how bad this compost will be, based on past experience with composts, Mr. Ivler stated that this person did not know what she was writing about because he read a study by the University of Minnesota that stated that composting will not catch fire or smell.
This person was lambasted by this blog for having an opposite opinion. As we all know, this compost smelled like a dead body all over the region.
Ms. Mejia, who always seems to take her knowledge and opinions from Mr. Emerson’s blog before the next council meeting, was in favor of this compost heap and lobbied for it. Not more than two weeks after the “stench” started to dissipate, a large compost heap in Irvine caught fire. That shows you how valid a study from the University of Minnesota was when dealing with California climate.
It also tells a person not to believe the main opinions on Mr. Emerson’s blog. The Register and the News-Enterprise do a very good job and do not take sides. The same cannot be said of Mr. Emerson and his blog.
