College Park East drainage
I love the College Park East history article that was published recently because it’s always nice to know the history of a place. Since I have lived here, I have experienced the problems with drainage on the streets. I also see that efforts to fix the problems over the past several years has begun to work on some of them.
It’s the nature of the beast in our CPE history, but thankfully the city helps as much as it can when storms come.
Other than a complete rebuild of the neighborhood, we should just pray that the efforts the city’s public works department protects us from flooding. That’s all we can do—work with what we have.

Wetlands actually slated for restoration
Tom Hetherington, in the Oct. 21, Sun Newspaper Opinion column had several observations and suggestions for the 2011 Seal Beach City Council. However, his suggestion for a nine-hole golf course on the “old Airport Club” property just won’t be happening.
This property, more accurately referred to as the “State Lands Parcel,” just this side of the PCH bridge, is owned by the State Lands Commission. The area is currently being considered for future Hellman property and other wetlands restoration efforts and viewing access.
A good source for further information are the Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust (www.lcwlandtrust.org) and the El Dorado Audubon Society (www.eldoradoaudubon.org) Web sites. Both these organizations are actively involved in stewarding the conservation and public education (Gum Grove bird walks, field trips into the Long Beach and Seal Beach wetlands areas, etc) of our wetland areas.
The Seal Beach Development Services Department is also planning for community presentations in 2011 to keep all of us informed on these exciting wetlands restoration efforts, which will be occurring “in our backyard” (OK, side yard, front yard, etc. for College Park East and West, Leisure World, the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station and even Island Village). Stay tuned.
