Leisure World woman struck by golf cart

A 93-year-old Leisure World resident suffered serious injuries Tuesday, March 12, when a golf cart struck her as she crossed a street riding a mobility scooter. She is being treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. The police have not released the names of either the driver or the victim.

Everyone involved was apparently sober, according to the Seal Beach Police Department. The driver of the golf cart was not cited at the scene.

The police were called at 11:23 a.m. to St. Andrews Drive, north of Tam O’Shanter Road, in Leisure World. Paramedics were already there when police arrived. The victim was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

According to a statement issued by the Police Department, the preliminary investigation indicates that the golf cart driver did not yield to the victim, who was crossing the intersection in the crosswalk.

Golf carts have become increasingly popular in Leisure World in recent years. However, owners cannot drive them outside of Leisure World because the Department of Motor Vehicles does not consider them street legal. They cannot be driven on bicycle paths or on surface streets.

Police are asking anyone with information about this collision to contact Officer Joe Garcia at (562) 799-4100, extension 1649.
