The “new and improved” Leisure World globe is undergoing final preparations before it’s unveiled to the world at large next month. The renovation, which started in March 2015, was delayed when major structural damage was discovered after work began. The globe has been shrouded by a gradually-deteriorating tarp for more than a year. Two weeks ago, residents had a brief chance to see the orb when the covering was removed for painting, and a new tarp was installed.
A ceremony for the globe’s official debut is planned for Saturday, Oct. 8.
The globe was originally going to cost about $175,000 to renovate, however, the scope of work was expanded once contractors started the project. It is now expected to run $364,270. Leisure World residents will not be charged an assessment, officials said. It was paid for out of the Reserve Fund that the retirement community maintains.
