On Wednesday, Jan. 3, a fire broke out on Violet Street in Seal Beach. The fire occurred after the Sun had been sent to press.
The fire was reported around 7:25 p.m. to the Orange County Fire Authority and was quickly extinguished.
After a thorough search of the residence by OCFA firefighters, it was determined that one person had passed away.
Another person was found injured and taken to a hospital.
Responding units came “from multiple stations: Seal Beach, Garden Grove, Cypress, Los Alamitos, Westminster: 5 engines; 2 trucks; 2 battalion chiefs; Safety officer; Investigators; 2 ambulances,” wrote Sean Doran, OCFA fire captain and public information officer, in a Monday, Jan. 8 email.
Capt. Doran wrote that law enforcement would notify the next of kin
“Also, media used the words ‘two victims were found inside.’ However, one patient was outside upon our arrival and transported and one patient was found inside deceased by our firefighters during their search,” wrote Capt. Doran in a follow-up email.
On Tuesday, Jan. 9, Doran provided another update. “The cause was determined to be unintentional, improperly discarded smoking materials,” he wrote.
