Steve Smout of Huntington Beach will participate in America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride, a 100-mile cycling event around Lake Tahoe, on Sunday, June 6.
The event will raise money for cancer research through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Orange County/Inland Empire Chapter’s Team In Training program. In TNT, participants compete in marathons, bike rides, triathlons and hiking events to raise money for blood cancer research.
Smout is an exterminator. He came to the United States from England. He was recruited to the event by his wife.
A friend of the couple is a leukemia survivor.
“Although the training is getting more challenging, I’m loving it. I’m really motivated by a desire to help those battling blood cancers,” Smout said.
The LLS Orange County/Inland Empire chapter has raised $1.5 million through TNT in the past year.
Currently, the chapter is recruiting participants for two TNT 5K and 10K events, the Coaster Run at Knott’s Berry Farm on Sunday, April 18 and a Cinco de Mayo event in Irvine on May 5.
The fundraising minimum is a modest $250.
