Parents of High Schoolers, looking for an excuse to get your student to spend time outdoors? Head to the water.
The Southern California Scullers Club is offering introductory and continuing rowing lessons for 8th-12th grade students. Learn-To-Row (LTR) at SoCal Scullers is a fun, interactive program geared toward 8th-12th grade students. Over the course of the program, students will learn skills including proper beginning technique to row safely and confidently, how to care for boats, and teamwork. During the program, students can learn about and prioritize on-water safety, make memories and friends that will last, and fall in love with the sport. After program participation, students are also welcome to try out for the SoCal Scullers’ competitive team. Rowing is also one of the top sports recruited by colleges, with one in three female recruits earning partial or full scholarships each year. Many influential public figures cite rowing as a force in their self-development toward success. Some famous rowers include Hugh Laurie, “SoCal Scullers provides rowing instruction and training for young adults and youth,” reads the team’s Facebook page. “We are based at the Sunset Aquatic Marina and row on 3,500 meters of beautiful tranquil waters in Huntington Harbor.” The SoCal Scullers, is a USRowing Partner Training Center, is tasked to develop young athletes for US national teams from the junior through Olympic levels. Enjoy getting in shape, trying something new, enjoying the outdoors or meeting new people in the community while rowing. Whatever the reason, learning about the sport of rowing can be an unforgettable experience and have potential to be a life-long endeavor.

“Learning to row is one of the best decisions I ever made,” said club member and collegiate rower Alexandra Coultrup. “My journey with rowing has developed me as a person and opened doors to many opportunities. I’d advise any student to give it a chance and see where rowing can take you.”
