George Demos of Huntington Harbour participated in the 2013 Senior Olympics on Saturday, June 1, at Cal Tech, Pasadena
He entered seven events in track and field and won seven gold medals.
He won gold medals in his age group in the 50 meters, 100 meters, long jump, javelin, discus, shot put, and softball throw.
George had participated in track and field in high school, college, US Army, and 12 senior Olympics.
While in the 11th Airborne Division stationed in Sapporo, Japan, he was the one-mile champion.
He also participated in many track meets against other military units in between wars.
On one weekend in Tokyo after the All-Japan track meet, he and an airborne buddy decided to see Mt. Fujiyama (the highest mountain in Japan).
“We saw the mountain and the Japanese slowly climbing and we decided to run up and down Mt. Fuji! Yes, the Japanese thought we were crazy, but we were 19-year-old long distance track men and we didn’t have the time to loaf along,” Demos said. “We think we were the first to complete the task successfully. Needless to say, we had great fun. Arigato and sayonara.”
