Girl Scout Troop 754 recently had the privilege to meet with Seal Beach Mayor Ellery Deaton, who represents Old Town and Surfside on the City Council, to discuss issues that are important to Seal Beach youth.

Issues of discussion included the gopher holes in Arbor Park, neighborhood safety measures, and youth activities offered by the city.

Mayor Deaton listened to their concerns and gave them advice on how to be active citizens in our local government.

They were also given a tour of City Hall, so they could learn more about the many departments that keep our city running.

“It was a great opportunity and encouraged us to be active in our community,” said Rachel Sandoval, one of the scout moms.

The girls in the troop are fourth-grade students at Weaver Elementary.   Their meeting with the mayor was one step toward earning their Inside Government badge.   They said they will each be reading The Sun Newspaper to find local stories that interest them.  The girl scouts will then have a group discussion about the different ways the government impacts their lives.
