Kindergartners in Seal Beach Girl Scout Troop #4180 learned about women working in non-traditional roles while attending their Wednesday, Feb. 3, meeting at the Girl Scout house in Seal Beach.
The girls enjoyed a talk from two extraordinary women, Dr. Lynn Shaw and Sgt. Mary Martinez, who brought to life the title of the talk, “We Can Do it!” inspired by the WWII era Rosie the Riveter propaganda poster.
Both women exemplify how girls can do and be anything they set their minds to.
Dr. Lynn Shaw, an electrician and Long Beach City College professor who holds a Ph.D. in a non-traditional field, talked about working with your hands, tools, and how just because there are not many women in certain fields, it doesn’t mean that girls cannot go into them.
Sgt. Mary Martinez, the first female sergeant in Seal Beach history, talked about working as a detective, her uniform, and being the first female police sergeant. Sgt. Martinez then swore in the girls as honorary Seal Beach officers and they took a pledge to “be kind, do well in school, and be good to their parents.”
The girls wore their Seal Beach police badge stickers with pride.
