First-grader designs logo for Seal Beach Fun Run

Liberty Osti, 6, and her prize for designing the Kids Fun Run logo.

Liberty Osti is only in first-grade but that didn’t dash the six-year-old girl’s dreams of creating a wining logo for the Seal Beach 5K/10K and Kids Fun Run event to be held on April 2.

Osti took first place in the annual contest and won a classy Sachi 20-inch beach cruiser from Main Street Cyclery. Her design, featuring the mascot Sammy the Seal in a baseball cap and with a prominent starfish above conjures images of fun and running in the sun in our beachfront community

The 5K/10K Run has moved into full swing now that it is 2011.

Michelle Samuelson, who serves as the chair of the 1K Kids Fun Run, announced the three place winners for the kid’s T-shirt contest on Thursday, Feb. 3, at McGaugh Elementary School in Seal Beach.

Rounding out second place was Summer Welsh, 8, who received a skateboard from Golden State Goods and third was captured neatly by Margaret Wickwire, 10, who received a $50 gift certificate from Harbour Surfboards.

Congratulations were offered to the three winners and the other 26 individuals who submitted designs.

The committee first evaluated all the submissions and winnowed down the field to six finalists. From them, the winning three were determined by vote of the race team.

“So many of the designs were so good, it was hard to pick the winners,” said Tim Kelsey, Community Services Director. “Everyone who submitted should be proud of their effort. We actually had to stay late to make sure we got it down to three.”

Osti’s design will be touched up by the race’s graphic design firm and then will emblazon all the children’s T-shirts. Along with the kid’s shirts, the newly designed corporate logo of the race will be on the participant’s shirts with the corporate sponsors in the back.

“This year, we are looking at increased participation by both runners and walkers. We have also had an amazing level of support from our corporate partners and sponsors. We hope this will be the best race yet,” said Marc Loopesko, race chairman.

For the last 36 years, the 5K/10K has been produced without any paid staff and a core committee of about a dozen people. Hundreds of volunteers—many of them coming from the various organizations that have been funded in part by grants from the committee—turn out in force on race day. This is especially true when creating a space for the kids to play in during the race.

Dendreon Corporation will sponsor the Kids Fun Zone, which is a secured play area after the 1K Fun Run.
