And they’re off.
It’s officially election season in Seal Beach.
“The nomination period begins Monday, July 15, 2024, and ends Friday, August 9, 2024,” wrote City Clerk Gloria Harper in her staff report to the council. City Hall is scheduled to close at 5 p.m., Aug. 9.
The council unanimously approved an ordinance on Monday, June 10, 2024, calling the election, asking the Orange County Board of Supervisors to consolidate Seal Beach’s election with the statewide General Election. The council also adopted regulations for candidates.
Finally, the council adopted a resolution providing for a runoff election if no candidate receives 50% of the vote, plus one.
Two council seats are open this year. District Two Council Member Tom Moore and District Four Council Member/Mayor Schelly Sustarsic have termed out.
The election will be held Nov. 5, 2024. If necessary, a runoff election will be held on Jan. 28, 2025.
“The estimated cost to consolidate the City’s General Municipal Election with the County of Orange Statewide General Election on the November 5, 2024, ballot is approximately $ 19,407 and will be included in the FY 2024-25 Budget,” Harper wrote.
“The cost of a run-off election is estimated at $46,000-$65,000 per Council district for an estimated total of $125,000 if both districts 2 and 4 require a run-off. If a run-off election is necessary, a budget adjustment will be brought to the Council at that time,” Harper wrote.
