District One planner resigns

The Seal Beach planning commissioner for District One resigned effective Friday, Jan. 18.

The City Council is expected to appoint his replacement tonight, Monday, Jan. 28.

“I resigned as Planning Commissioner for District One due to family reasons,” David Everson told the Sun.

“Our family is moving out of state and since I will no longer be residing in Seal Beach, it is not possible for me to continue my job as Planning Commissioner,” Everson said.

Everson informally told his fellow commissioners about his resignation at the Wednesday, Jan. 16, Planning Commission meeting, according to fellow Commissioner Esther Cummings.

A notice posted on the bulletin board at City Hall said that the City Council may appoint a replacement for Commissioner Everson on or after Jan. 28.

In June 2012, Everson was one of four Planning Commission members who voted to approve the Bay City Partners’ Ocean Place housing development on the property once owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

At the time, Everson said he was concerned that if the Planning Commission imposed an overly stringent land use on the property that the result would be the same as the hotel restriction—a property that wouldn’t be developed at all.

Everson is the second District One commissioner to resign in recent weeks.

Mark Loopesko resigned as the Recreation and Parks Commissioner for District One resigned on Jan. 4.

Loopesko has been replaced by Roz Bennett, a 36-year resident of Seal Beach and grandmother.
