District 5 councilwoman is the new mayor

The two newest members of the Seal Beach City Council are now the mayor and mayor pro tem.

The council this week voted unanimously to  make District Five Councilwoman Sandra Massa-Lavitt the mayor. District One Councilwoman Ellery Deaton, the outgoing mayor, nominated Massa-Lavitt to be her successor. No other candidates were nominated.

Massa-Lavitt represents part of Leisure World.

The council also voted unanimously to make District Three Councilman Mike Varipapa mayor pro tem.  District Two Councilman David Sloan, the outgoing mayor pro tem, nominated Varipapa.

Both Massa-Lavitt and Varipapa were elected to their first council terms in November 2014.
