Los ALamitos Child abuse case might move to mental health court
May 21 hearing will determine if defendant is eligible for Orange County specialty court
A Mental Health Court Eligibility hearing will be held Monday, May 21, in the case of a woman accused of dropping a then 9-day-old child in front of a police officer, according to the Orange County Superior Court website.
“The May 21st hearing is to determine if the defendant is eligible for Mental Health Court,” said Farrah Emami, spokesperson for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
The Mental Health Court is a court that specializes in dealing with the mentally ill.
Natasha Latise Lundy, now 21, has been charged with four felony counts including child endangerment and assault with a deadly weapon.
According to authorities, on July 24, 2011, witnesses saw a woman swinging a small child around and called the Los Alamitos Police Department.
She was still swinging the baby when an officer arrived.
The officer ordered the woman to stop. She dropped the infant, who was then 9 days old.
The child survived.
There is no evidence that the woman, his mother, was under the influence of drugs.
At the time of her arrest, Los Alamitos Police Capt. Bruce McAlpine said there was a question of whether Lundy was competent.
A hearing was held from September 2011 to March 2012 to determine if the defendant was mentally competent to stand trial.
Lundy remains in custody in the Orange County Jail. Her bail has been set at $100,000. According to the Sheriff’s Department website, she is unemployed.
