Crime Log: Seal Beach Police to receive Homeland Security grant money

Seal Beach will receive $5,834.41 in federal grant money for training police personnel. The City Council on Monday, Feb. 11, passed a resolution that would allow City Manager Jill Ingram to access the grant funds.

The money will be for two different training programs. Seal Beach will receive $3,376.67 for a Homeland SecurityUrban Area Security Initiative Regional Training Program and another $2,457.74 for the Terrorism Liaison Officer training programs. “The city must enter into agreement with the city of Santa Ana which is the UASI core agency for the Anaheim/Santa Ana Urban Area to facilitate the transfer of Homeland Security Grant funds,” said a staff report prepared by Capt. Tim Olson.

Monday, January 28

Municipal Code Violation—11:56 a.m.—5th Street—The caller said a man in an alley was going through the trash. Police unit 107 contacted an individual who matched the caller’s description of that individual and advised him against violating the municipal code. He said he would comply.

Found Property—1:13 p.m.—Seal Beach Police Department Headquarters, Seal Beach Boulevard—An individual found a wallet at an unspecified location in Sunset Beach and turned the wallet in to the Seal Beach Police Department.

The log did not contain any information explaining why the citizen took the wallet to Seal Beach when Sunset Beach is within the Huntington Beach city limits. The wallet was left at the SBPD’s front counter.

Coyote—6:09 p.m.—Candleberry and Fuchsia—The caller saw the coyote at approximately 5:45 p.m. Police delivered a message to Long Beach Animal Care Services after the animal control agency’s regular business hours.

Tuesday, January 29

Welfare Check—12:58 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller requested a welfare check on a man on a bench next to a business. The caller tried to wake the man, but was unable to do so. The man was breathing. Police unit 107 arrived. The man was apparently awake by that time, for the officer spoke with him. He had been drinking and he complained about unknown ailments. He was transported to a hospital.

Wednesday, January 30

Boat Theft—10:07 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—Sometime during the night, someone stole the caller’s boat and the trailer it was on. The boat was described as a fiberglass 17-foot Boston whaler with an outboard motor. Report taken.

Suspicious Circumstances—8:57 p.m.—Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway—The caller saw two individuals in an alley behind the businesses facing the 200 block of Main Street. They were yelling and banging on a van in which a man’s body was found the previous week. Police unit 207 found two drunk individuals paying their respects to the memory of Don “Waldo” Autry. The officer counseled them about their behavior. Matter solved.

Thursday, January 31

Robbery—9:19 p.m.—Marina Drive—The caller reported a robbery committed by an individual who was armed with a handgun and wearing a black bag over his head with holes cut out for his eyes.

The suspect was described as being in his 30s based on the sound of the suspect’s voice. On this same basis, the caller described the suspect as black or Hispanic. His height was estimated at 5 feet 10 inches and his build was described as heavy. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark pants, white gloves and white shoes. Report taken.

Friday, February 1

Grand Theft Report—8:37 a.m.—Edinger Avenue—The caller reported a theft from a boat in dry dock that occurred within the last month. Loss: a Volvo Penta lower outdrive valued at $5,300, a Ray Marine Fish Finder and a GPS valued at $2,500. Report taken.

Disturbance—5:41 p.m.—Agua Place—The caller said juveniles set up a playground in the street in front of the caller’s home. The juveniles apparently dispersed before police unit 107 arrived.

Counseling—8:25 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller requested counseling about a continuing problem with the caller’s home getting egged. Someone came to her door and egged her door. The caller said she was too afraid to go outside and wash it off.

Saturday, February 2

Disturbance, Juveniles—10:16 a.m.—Agua Place—The caller said children had created a playground in the street with chalk. The caller was upset about this. Police met with the caller. The log said there was no identified violation of law.  The caller was counseled.

Monday, January 28

Vandalism—9:50 a.m.—Golden Rain Road, Mutual Unknown—Someone keyed the caller’s car on the driver’s side door and hood within the last few weeks.

Tuesday, January 29

Identity Theft—11:56 a.m.—Merion Way, Mutual 2—Someone used the caller’s personal information to open accounts. Report taken.

Saturday, February 2

Petty Theft Report—9:32 a.m.—McKinney Way, Mutual 15—A Leisure World resident was reportedly caught taking unspecified things from a laundry room. Report taken.

Sunday, February 3

Stakeout—8:15 p.m.—Golden Rain Road, Mutual 2—An individual was arrested for illegal possession of ammunition. The log said the charge was changed to illegal possession of a firearm.

Monday, February 4

Illegal Parked Vehicle—8:44 a.m.— Montecito Road and Copa De Oro Drive—An unspecified number of vehicles were reportedly parked illegally on Montecito Road during street sweeping hours.

Trespassing—9:18 a.m.— Montecito Road—The caller said a neighbor was present again, refusing to leave and rubbing dog feces on the caller’s door handles.

Tuesday, February 5

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—2:46 a.m.—Mainway Drive—The caller reported an individual kneeling by the side of a car in the street. The caller had recently reported burglaries.

The caller’s husband, an off-duty Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputy, went outside with a flashlight.

The suspicious individual was gone by the time of the call to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—8:03 a.m.—Wallingsford Road and Quail Run Road—A deputy performed a patrol check for two individuals who were reported standing on Quail Run Road. They were not doing anything, but the caller reportedly thought they looked suspicious.

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—8:19 a.m.—Shakespeare Drive and Baskerville Road—Two individuals were seen in a car with paper license plates.

Pedestrian Check—7:06 p.m.—Foster Road and Copa De Oro Drive—A deputy looked for a man who was reportedly wearing a Christmas cap.
