Crime Log: Seal Beach Police to hold DUI checkpoint

The Seal Beach Police Department will conduct a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint from 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13 to 3 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, on Pacific Coast Highway. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

All too often, members of the community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by drunk drivers. For example, College Park East resident Cathy Busse, 46, and her son Sam Busse, then 14, were struck by a Ford truck on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 12, 2008, while they were bicycling on Lampson Avenue. Sam Busse was treated for minor injuries. Cathy Busse died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008. The Seal Beach Police Department arrested the driver, Alex David Trujillo, for DUI murder on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008.

On Feb. 5, 2010, an Orange County Superior Court judge heard a defense argument that the prosecution had failed to establish that a crime had occurred. The motion, known as a California Penal Code 995 motion, is common in felony cases. Trujillo’s DUI murder trial was scheduled to continue on March 25.

This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce the number of such tragedies, as well as to insure that drivers have a valid driver’s license.  A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.

A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, SBPD officials believe motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.

Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. The SBPD’s objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs as part of the statewide “Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest” program. The Seal Beach Police are asking the public to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

For more information about the Feb. 13 DUI checkpoint, contact Sgt. Steve Bowles, SBPD public information officer, at (562) 342-7391.
