Crime Log: Seal Beach DUI checkpoint set for Thursday

SBPD has not disclosed location

Staff report

The Seal Beach Police Department will conduct a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint between 6 p.m., Thursday, April 25, and 3 a.m., Friday, April 26, according to a recent statement.

Sgt. Ron Lavelle said the checkpoint would be conducted on Seal Beach Boulevard, in front of Seal Beach Police Department Headquarters.

Lavelle said the checkpoint would probably be located on the northbound side of the street.

Officers will contact drivers passing through the checkpoint for signsof alcohol and/or drug impairment. Officers will also check drivers for proper licensing.

In 2011, nearly 10,000 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent or higher, the report said. In California, this crime led to 774 deaths.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable costsavings of $6 for every $1 spent.

The Office of Traffic Safety provided Seal Beach with a grant to pay for the checkpoint.
