According to Los Alamitos Police officials, an individual identifying himself as “Major Barret” is soliciting donations by telephone for a charitable fundraiser on behalf of a fictitious organization named the Los Alamitos Police Sheriff’s Association.
Targeting the elderly and others who believe the legitimacy of the caller, scam artists will use official titles and renditions of government agencies to dupe their victims. The Los Alamitos Police Department does not solicit monetary donations and asks the public to be wary of phone calls and persons seeking donations.
Los Alamitos Police Department to hold drug take back day
The Los Alamitos Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will hold a prescription drug take back day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 26.
The event will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
Bring your pills for disposal to LAPD headquarters at 3201 Katella Ave.
Liquid medications and needles (sharps) will not be accepted.
The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Nine residential burglaries in Belmont Shore area in March
The Long Beach Police Department received reports of nine burglaries from homes or residential garages in the Belmont Shore area of the city last month, according to information provided by the Belmont Shore Residents Association.
There was only one documented business burglary.
Police also received reports of eight thefts from vehicles in March, of which six were classified as automobile burglaries.
There were also four assaults, five car thefts and seven DUI incidents reported.

Petty Theft—9:05 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller said an unknown neighbor has been taking the caller’s trash cans for unknown reasons. The caller was advised to contact waste management for replacement cans. The caller was also advised to paint their address on the trash cans to avoid the issue again. Log item.
Counterfeit Money—1:47 p.m.—Daisy Street—The caller sold a mattress the night before and discovered that the bill used to pay for the mattress was counterfeit. The caller met the suspect through the Internet.

Traffic Hazard—7:11 p.m.—Basswood and Lampson—According to the log, a well cover in the number one lane of Lampson east of Basswood had been repeatedly blown off when cars drove over it. Police unit 241 replaced the well cover. Message delivered to Public Works.

Possible Transient—10:32 a.m.—Marina Drive—The caller reported a man who the caller apparently described as a transient sleeping on a bench in the courtyard near the playground. The caller said children would be going out to play at 11 a.m. Police received a similar report on March 31 of a transient who usually uses the fountain near the playground to bathe himself. It was not clear from the dispatch log if the individual in the April 8 report was the same individual in the March 31 report.

Pedestrian Check—2:42 a.m.—Katella Avenue—The caller reported a person acting suspiciously, ducking quickly in and out of a location and watching an officer over his shoulder, and then hiding behind a corner. The individual was interviewed by patrol and checked out OK.
Keep the Peace—3:19 a.m.—Howard Avenue—The caller said that he wanted his roommate removed from his residence. The caller did not know his address and refused to give the last name of his friend. The caller said he wanted his ex-wife and friend removed but would not say why. The caller was uncooperative. The caller was assisted.
Transient—11:45 a.m.—Bloomfield Street—The caller reported a man was outside the location and was talking to himself and wandering into traffic. The individual was picked up by his sister. Matter was resolved.

Suspicious Person—2:02 a.m.—Orangewood Avenue—The caller said that two individuals were found on the property and they ran when the caller contacted them. The caller said they had come through the fence. The two individuals had not been detained and were running. They were seen running southeast on the golf course. Security reported that they believed the individuals had left the property.

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—12:34 p.m.—Martha Ann Drive—A deputy searched for a man who had reportedly been sitting in a truck for 20 minutes, looking around and possibly taking pictures with his cell phone.
Welfare Check—10:43 p.m.—Tigertail Drive—The caller requested a welfare check on a child whose mother left The Sportsman bar in Los Alamitos. The caller, a Sportsman customer, said a woman had been in the bar drinking and bragging about her 7-week-old infant. The woman took the caller outside to show off the infant. The woman swung the infant around before driving off.

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—12:45 p.m.—Loch Lomond Road—A deputy searched for a woman in a sedan who was on the phone as she sat in the driver’s seat. The caller was concerned due to recent burglaries in the area.

Thursday, April 10
Stolen Vehicle Located—9:25 a.m.—Cortese Drive—The caller reported a car that had been parked in the same location for several weeks with the windows cracked open. The car was unlocked and a broken key was in the ignition. The car turned out to have been stolen.
