The Seal Beach Police Department will conduct a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint from 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 26, to 3 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 27 on Pacific Coast Highway between 12th Street and Main Street, according to a recent Police Department press release.
In related news, the SBPD announced on its Facebook page that the California Traffic Safety Office has granted the city $75,000 for traffic checkpoints from November 2010 to September 2011.
Funding for the Nov. 26 checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested.
Police are encouraging the public to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
SBPD hosts FBI armored car robbery seminar
The Federal Bureau of Investigation presented a program on armored car industry personnel and equipment at Seal Beach Police Department headquarters on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Several Seal Beach employees were among more than 60 participates in the seminar.
According to a press release from the city of Seal Beach, the armored car industry is suffering from an increase in both robberies and the killing of their guards.
For the seminar, instructors brought five armored cars to demonstrate how officers should investigate armored car robberies and the killings of guards.
In addition to its investigative powers, the FBI is authorized to provide other law enforcement agencies with cooperative services, such as fingerprint identification, laboratory examinations, and police training.
“Even in the best of times, departmental resources seldom seem adequate to guarantee the level of public safety and public service expected by the community,” said Jeff Kirkpatrick, chief of the SBPD.
“We appreciate being able to take advantage of these external resources,” he said.
The seminar was presented in collaboration with the Armored Car Association of California and the Orange and Los Angeles County Robbery Investigator’s associations.
State issues achievement certificates to SBPD officers
Two Seal Beach Police officers received certificates of achievement from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training the week ending Friday, Nov. 19.
Officer Ryan Corbin received the POST Intermediate and Advanced certificates. Officer Michael Pistilli received the POST Intermediate Certificate. POST certificates are awarded based on an officer’s time-in-grade, formal education, in-service training and experience.
“Congratulations to both Ryan and Mike,” said Chief of Police Jeff Kirkpatrick.
