Crime Log: Man reports attempted assault with automobile

An employee of a business on Old Ranch Parkway reported an assault with a deadly weapon—a tan Volvo—following an argument on Thursday morning, May 24.

The incident was reported to the Seal Beach Police Department at 6:50 a.m.

The caller said an elderly man in a tan Volvo tried to run him over in the parking lot.

Accordng to the caller’s account, he was in the parking lot when the Volvo pulled up beside him. The Volvo driver verbally abused the caller and “flipped him off.”

The caller went back to work.

However, after an unspecificed period of time, the caller saw the Volvo driving around the caller’s car in the parking lot.

The caller went back to the parking lot. The caller told police that he intended to take a picture of the suspect.

That’s when the driver of the Volvo tried to hit the caller with the Volvo itself.

He apparently missed.

The Volvo then fled the parking lot.

The suspect was described as an elderly white man, wearing a tan Member’s Only jacket.

Los Al police find 39 grams of marijuana

A Los Alamitos Police Department officer arrested a man for possession of 39 grams of marijuana on Sunday, May 20.

Police first received a report of someone smoking marijuana in a car in the Los Alamitos Racetrack parking lot. Although the race track is in the city of Cypress, the incident was reported to Los Al PD.

Capt. Bruce McAlpine said that when the officer arrived at the scene, the officer could smell marijuana “emanating” from the car.

The officer searched the car. McAlpine said the officer found individually wrapped packages of marijuana in the car. The packages collectively weighed 39 grams.

McAlpine said the driver, Kyle Scott Harpt, 20, of Cypress, admitted to transporting the marijuana for sale.

McAlpine said he did not know the street value of the seized marijuana.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department website, Harpt was released on his own recognizance—at 7 p.m., Monday, May 21.

There is no information about a drug case against Harpt at the Orange County Superior Court website.

Burglary Report—11:53 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—Someone entered the caller’s garage and stole a 1974 Yamaha.

The crime apparently occurred between 3 p.m., Friday, May 18  and 5 p.m., Sunday, May 20. Point of entry: a cut lock.

Counseling—12:07 p.m.—Marine Avenue—The caller said someone or something walked across his roof at an unknown time that morning. The caller said he was afraid to call the police for reasons unknown. Counseled.

Possible Drug Violation—1:43 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway and Second Street (Long Beach)—The caller reported seeing the driver of a car smoking marijuana.

The caller reported smelling the marijuana and seeing the man driving the car smoking.

The car was last seen going southbound on Pacific Coast Highway.

Attempted Petty Theft—2:32 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said two young men stole an iPad from the location.

The suspects were there to have some service work done and then took the iPad off the table. However, the caller found the iPad in the bushes outside. No report requested. The caller was counseled.

Petty Theft—10:51 a.m.—Sixth Street—Someone used the caller’s account to spend $623 on new phones.

Extra Patrol Check Requested—11:14 a.m.—Driftwood Avenue—The caller’s house was being tented and fumigated from Wednesday, May 23, through Friday, May 25. The caller requested extra patrol checks through Friday. Log entry.

Traffic Hazard Reported—2:58 a.m.—College Park Drive—The caller said a large truck blocked the entrance of College Park West.

The truck was delivering bricks and the caller said it was blocking the road for the residents. However, police unit 442 found that a work crew was directing traffic around the truck. There was a minor back up, but no traffic hazard.

Disturbance, Juveniles—4:30 p.m.—Seal Way—The caller said two juveniles, boys, were on skateboards in the boardwalk area, hitting their skateboard against garages and other property. Police unit 104 contacted two boys, who were cooperative. They were advised to discontinue their behavior and they said they would.

Wednesday, May 23

Auto Theft Report—8:15 a.m.—First Street—The caller parked a red, silver and white 2004 Honda on First Street on Friday, May 18, and when the caller returned on Wednesday, May 23, it was gone.

Vehicle Burglary—8:17 a.m.—Marina Drive—The crime apparently occurred during the night between 10 p.m., Tuesday, May 22, and Wednesday, May 23. Point of entry: a smashed passenger window. Loss: a diaper bag. Report taken.

Identity Theft—3:31 p.m.—Fourth Street—Someone filed a tax return in the caller’s name.

Thursday, May 24

Barking—1:04 a.m.—B Row, Surfside Colony—The caller said the neighbor’s dog was extremely agitated and barking aggressively. The caller went by the residence. All the lights were on and the door might have been open. The caller thought this was suspicious and requested a patrol check. Police unit 207 attempted to contact the residents of the home in question. The officer checked the interior. No signs of a crime. Door secured.

Suspicious Person—3:27 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller reported hearing an individual in the back of the store talking about methamphetamine. The individual was hanging around the back, near the pharmacy area, and the caller was concerned that the individual might intend to commit a robbery or petty theft. Police unit 241 contacted the individual, who was wanted on a cite and release warrant for failure to appear in court for alleged violations of the California Vehicle Code. He was arrested.

Found Property—3:45 p.m.—Driftwood Avenue—The caller phoned police on behalf of a neighbor. The resident found an 8-foot by 10-foot advertising balloon that landed in the neighbor’s yard. The caller was concerned that there might be some value to the advertising balloon and that the neighbor might need police assistance.

At 4:06 p.m., the caller said they would take care of the balloon. Counseled.

Friday, May 25

Pedestrian Check—7:48 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street—Police unit 107 checked a pedestrian. The man was wanted on four warrants for violating the Seal Beach Municipal Code. He was released on citation due to unspecified medical issues.

Vehicle Burglary—10:34 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—Point of entry: unknown. The crime apparently occurred between 4 p.m., Thursday, May 24, and the time of the call to police. The dashboard was ripped apart. Loss: the stereo and other items were missing. Report taken.

Saturday, May 26

Vehicle Check—7:07 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The officer in police unit 106 advised an unspecified number of individuals against sleeping in a vehicle. They said they would comply.

Patrol Check—10:21 a.m.—Lampson Avenue—The officer in patrol unit advised two individuals that dogs were only allowed in the fenced area.

Business Burglary—11:54 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said three individuals stole $400 worth of hair products and bottled water. In California, shoplifting is considered burglary if there is evidence that the thief or thieves entered the business with the intent to steal. Report taken.

Patrol Check—9:22 a.m.—Lampson Avenue—The officer in police unit 141 advised four individuals that the Seal Beach Municipal Code did not allow them to fly model aircraft. They said they would comply.

Monday, May 21

Medical Aid—4:33 p.m.—Twin Hills Drive, Mutual 12—Life Line received a call on a non-emergency line. An attempt was made to transfer the call to the Orange County Fire Authority, but the county agency did not get the caller. Then police were told that the Fire Authority was en route. At 4:34 p.m., Leisure World Security advised that a man fell. Referred.

Thursday, May 24

Keep The Peace—9:26 a.m.—Homewood Road, Mutual 5—The caller said a young couple had been in a unit since Saturday, May 19. The female half of the couple is apparently executor to the unit. However, Leisure World does not allow relatives to stay overnight in a unit when a resident is no longer alive or when a resident is in the hospital. Assisted.

Friday, May 25

Grand Theft—12:31 p.m.—Nassau Drive, Mutual 9—Someone stole a cabinet valued at $8,000 to $10,000 during the past month. Report taken.

911 Hang-Up—6:19 a.m.—Monterey Road, Mutual 2—It turned out a resident had been trying to program 911 into her phone and dialed the number by mistake.

Friday, May 18

Traffic Hazard—7:52 a.m. –Katella and Noel—The caller said construction workers were pouring concrete so Noel was blocked off going north.

The caller said that there were not enough cones in the turn lane to alert drivers, who were jumping back into traffic and making u-turns and cutting off traffic once they learned Noel was blocked.

The construction crew was advised to put out more cones and signs. They complied.

Saturday, May 19

Drug Violation—4:50 p.m.—Bloomfield and Katella—The caller said that the driver of a blue SUV was smoking something out of a pipe while driving in the slow lane of Katella Avenue.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle. The driver had turned onto Cherry Avenue and the caller no longer had sight of the vehicle.

Monday, May 21

Suspicious Person—2:28 p.m.—Katella Avenue—The caller said a man in his 40s was sitting in a lawn chair and videotaping students as they were leaving school. The caller said the man appeared to be taking notes about the children he was taping. The caller had left the area, but had taken a photo of the suspect if needed. It turned out the man was a private investigator who was taping the red lights at the intersection for an attorney. He checked out OK.

Thursday, May 24

Suspicious Person—12:50 a.m.—Los Alamitos Boulevard—The caller said a man had been sitting outside a bar for the past four hours. He was described as being in his late 20s with a heavy build and black hair. Patrol contacted the man, who said he was having issues with his mom and did not want to go home and confront her. He was cooperative and checked out OK.

Disturbance—5:54 p.m.—Lampson Avenue—The caller said two men had a dispute over one man’s dog biting the other man’s dog. A fight seemed pending. The man whose dog bit the other appeared to be the aggressor and also appeared to be under the influence. He was yelling at women too. Both parties were counseled.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—12:25 a.m.—Quail Run Road.—An unspecified number of individuals were reportedly smoking drugs, but it was unknown if they were inside or outside.

Reckless Driving—11:50 a.m.—Kensington Road—Two juveniles were seen on yellow dirt bikes on campus at Hopkinson Elementary.

Vandalism Report—12:38 p.m.—Christy Lane—A vehicle was vandalized. The owner was not present.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—2:58 p.m.—Wallingsford Road and Katella Avenue—The caller said a man on a bike was trying to open the door of a van in a church parking lot. A deputy was unable to find anyone matching the suspect’s description. The vans in the parking lot were apparently secure.

Annoying Phone Call—4:12 p.m.—Shakespeare Drive.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—10:36 p.m.—Foster Road—Two men got out of a vehicle and walked towards the middle of the school at the location. The caller thought they were up to no-good. The caller phoned back and said the two men returned to their vehicle and left on Foster Road. No suspect description. Their vehicle was described as a white Dodge.

Patrol Check—11:12 p.m.—Brimhall Drive—When the caller came home she noticed two of her radios had been turned on. She did Not Want Contact. She requested a patrol check. A deputy checked the area and found nothing suspicious.

Pedestrian Check—11:49 p.m.—Christy Lane and Walker Lee Drive—The caller reported a man in a plaid jacket and pajama bottoms on the 12000 block of Christy Lane. A deputy contacted the man and determined no further law enforcement services were necessary.
