Crime Log: Los Al police nab home burglary suspect

Los Alamitos Police arrested a 21-year-old Los Alamitos resident for residential burglary on Saturday, May 28—the same day that the crime was reported.

According to Police Department records, a Los Al home was reported burglarized at 11:58 a.m.

Someone had entered the garage and removed property during the night.

Police located the stolen property in an unspecified city that was located “nearby,” according to the Weekly Crime Summary.

In the process of locating the stolen property, police identified a suspect in the burglary. The suspect’s name is unknown. He was booked for burglary, possession of stolen property, and possession of a syringe. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office could file those charges against the defendant or file different charges. No further details were available at press time.

Seal Beach Marine Safety report

Seal Beach Lifeguards performed 18 rescues between June 3 and Thursday, June 9, according to the Marine Safety (Lifeguard) Department weekly status report.

Lifeguards responded to five medical aid calls. None of those calls were considered major.

Lifeguards also treated 15 stingray injuries. (That sounds like a lot, but remember that one third of the stingray injuries reported each year in the United States is are reported in Seal Beach.)

Monday, May 30

Extra Patrol Checks Requested—9:05 a.m.—1st Street—The caller complained about transients loitering and setting up camp in the area, leaving their property around a business and the restrooms. The caller also requested extra patrol checks for the night shift. Message delivered.

Counseling—1:15 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—A citizen walked into Seal Beach Police headquarters and asked how to a get a dog released from Long Beach Animal Care Services. Long Beach ACS has a contract to provide animal control services to the cities of Seal Beach and Los Alamitos.

Animal Information—5:07 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway and 5th Street—The caller reported an injured pelican on the southbound side of Pacific Coast Highway.

Tuesday, May 31

Animal Welfare Check—5:42 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller reported a dog in a vehicle with all the windows rolled up. The caller didn’t know how long the dog had been in the vehicle. The caller did say the dog was barking. California Penal Code597.7 makes it a crime to leave an animal in an unattended vehicle. If the animal dies, the penalty can be a fine of $500 or county jail time or both.

Dead Animal—8:06 p.m.—Neptune Avenue—The caller reported a dead seal near the water line. The dispatcher left a message for the beach crew. Public Works Department staff were already aware of the dead animal.

Wednesday, June 1

Petty Theft Report—7:56 a.m.—7th Street—Someone took a bike from the caller’s backyard patio during the night. The bike was valued at $700.

Counseling—1:04 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—A citizen deposited a money order for $1,000 on May 24 and, according to the bank, the check was never deposited into the citizen’s account.

Transient—7:25 p.m.—Galleon Way—The caller said a transient was living in the planter at the end of Galleon. Police unit 207 determined the homeless person was not present. The officer planned to return later to attempt to contact him.

Thursday, June 2

Suspicious Circumstances—10:10 p.m.—Birchwood Avenue—The caller reported hearing a helicopter in the area 30 minutes earlier. The woman said the helicopter flashed its lights on the neighborhood. She reported seeing a shadow over her back yard wall. She believed someone might have jumped from her yard into a neighboring, vacant house. Dispatchers checked with law enforcement in Garden Grove and Westminster: neither community was working on anything involving a helicopter. Police unit 241 determined the residence in question was secure. The officer did not find anything suspicious on the property.

Friday, June 3

Found Property—1:11 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—A man found a man’s wallet on Pacific Coast Highway and turned in to Seal Beach Police headquarters. The wallet was brown and contained expired Utah identification, credit cards, cash and an ATM card.

Saturday, June 4

Petty Theft—11:30 a.m.—4th Street—The bike racks were taken off the caller’s car sometime during the night. The bike racks were valued at $700. Report taken.

Open Door—1:03 p.m.—Columbine Street—The caller noticed his neighbor’s front door was open. He didn’t think anyone was home. There were no vehicles in sight. He thought he saw someone with long hair inside the house. Police unit 107 found the homeowners having a bridal shower at the house in the back yard. Matter solved.

Sunday, June 5

Petty Theft—9:01 p.m.—Church Place—Someone stole a bikes that was chained in the carport. The crime occurred sometime that day. The bike had two baskets on the back, straddling the fender.

Monday, May 30

Counseling—6:46 p.m.—Merion Way, Mutual 2—Police unit 206 attempted to contact an individual who reportedly used an air soft gun to shoot at rats. It was not known if the man in question had real weapons. Air soft guns resemble real firearms. He was reportedly fine when Leisure World Security contacted him earlier.

Friday, June 3

Scam—7:13 p.m.—Glenview Road, Mutual 12—A Leisure World woman received a message from a man claiming to be her nephew. He said he needed money. She sent $3,800. However, she realized she was being conned and cancelled the transaction. She got her money back. Counseled.

Petty Theft Report—2:23 p.m.—Northwood Road, Mutual Unknown—Someone stole an unlocked bike from a Leisure World resident’s carport sometime during the night. The bike was valued at $400.

Friday, June 3

Fire—3:19 p.m.—Bloomfield Avenue and Cerritos Avenue—Police received a report of smoke coming from a signal box. Orange County Fire Authority dispatch advised that the box was not on fire, but that smoke is coming from the vents. The signal controlled by the box would flash until the box was repaired. Four-way stop signs were requested.

Saturday, June 4

Bees—4:04 p.m.—Green Avenue—A beehive was found in a city tree. Referred to Public Works.

Sunday, June 5

Assault—7:33 p.m.—Toland Avenue—The caller reported that a transient threw a cup of ice at him without provocation. The suspect was at the entrance to the drainage ditch on Ball behind the caller’s residence. The caller was not hit by the ice, but requested extra patrol checks because the suspect frequents the flood control channel.

Monday, June 6

Disturbance—6:18 p.m.—Howard Avenue—The caller’s neighbor forced her way in to the caller’s residence five minutes earlier because of a fight. The caller also got a scratch on her arm from the door. The responding officer found that the fight involved the caller’s daughter. All parties were counseled.

Tuesday, June 7

Fight—10:51 a.m.—Katella Avenue—About 14 juveniles were reported fist-fighting near the baseball diamond. No weapons seen. The caller said the juveniles had stopped fighting and were now sitting around. The responding officer found that the juveniles had boxing gloves and were on a break.

Wednesday, June 8

Traffic Hazard—4:44 p.m.—Katella Avenue and Los Alamitos Boulevard—The caller reported an old 1934 red Chevrolet Nova on Los Alamitos Boulevard in the left turn lane for Katella Avenue. Responding officer found the car out of gas and helped to move it out of traffic lanes.
