Crime Log: Jogger saves man from car in river

A driver apparently accelerated his car, went through a chain link fence and ended up in the San Gabriel River Tuesday morning, Nov. 13. Fortunately, for him, another man was jogging along the San Gabriel River at the time. According to Cpl. Mary Martinez of the Seal Beach Police Department, the driver was suffering from “medical problems” that led to the accidental acceleration of the car. Martinez said the jogger dove into the water, broke a window of the car and pulled the driver to safety. “He’s our hero,” Martinez said. Martinez could not provide any information about the jogger, or the driver, as the incident occurred in the Long Beach Police Department’s jurisdiction. Nancy Pratt, of the Long Beach Police Department’s media relations office, said there were no passengers in the car. She said Long Beach officers were working on retrieving the submerged car. Arraignment set in Leisure World DUI manslaughter By Charles M. Kelly An arraignment has been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the traffic death of a Leisure World resident. A preliminary hearing was held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the case of Leisure World resident Dale Snyder Quinn, 75, who has been charged with gross manslaughter while driving under the influence. Quinn has pleaded not guilty to the sole charge of gross manslaughter while driving under the influence. A preliminary hearing is intended to determine if a case will go to trial. An arraignment is a formal reading of charges against a defendant in a criminal case. According to authorities, at 5:39 p.m., Sunday, May 20, a motorist ran into an 86-year-old man when he crossed a Leisure World street in his motorized wheelchair. Both driver and victim were Leisure World residents. The driver, Quinn, 75, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence the day of the collission. However, she was later released due to an unspecified medical condition. Eight days after the collision, the man died at Long Beach Memorial. According to the Orange County Superior Court website, Quinn is out on $50,000 bail. No trial date has yet been scheduled in the case. Thursday, November 8 Suspicious Person—8:18 a.m.— Bloomfield Avenue—The caller reported that a man who was under the influence was outside the residence and refusing to leave. The man no longer lives at the residence. The man was pounding on the door and could be heard asking for the garage key. A patrol unit contacted the man who was sent on his way. The caller was concerned because the woman was seen looking into businesses and vehicles in the area. Patrol contacted the woman, who checked out OK.
