Crime Log: Burglaries dominate Belmont Crime report

Belmont Shore residents reported 11 burglaries in the last month of 2012, according to information supplied by Jeff Miller, secretary of the Belmont Shore Residents Association. The statistical report did not include details of incidents.

Ten of those burglaries were residential. Garage break-ins accounted for two of those burglaries.

There were also three automobile burglaries in Belmont Shore last month.

There were also four assault or battery reports, one of them on emergency personnel.

There were 10 vandalism reports to the Long Beach Police Department, of which only one was classified as vandalism causing more than $400 worth of damage.

Three bicycles were reported stolen.

Wednesday, December 26

Counseling—9:55 a.m.—Wisteria Street—Someone let the air out of the caller’s tires sometime during the night. Another vehicle in front of the caller’s location also had one low tire. The caller did not observe any punctures in the tires.

Petty Theft Report—11:43 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—An individual who was described in the log as a transient—his name was blacked out—said he left a blue nylon bag on Seal Beach Boulevard for about 10 minutes. When he returned, the bag was gone. The bag contained $300. Report taken.

Fireworks—12:25 p.m.—A Row, Surfside Colony—The caller said a juvenile, a boy, was setting off fireworks Tuesday night, Dec. 25. Log entry.

Thursday, December 27

Disturbance, Juveniles—12:12 a.m.—Dahlia Circle—The caller said an unspecified number of juveniles were playing loud music. The caller said there was a continuing problem with the same group of juveniles. (The word “juvenile” simply means the individuals in question were minors. The word does not mean or imply delinquent conduct.)

Grand Theft Report—9:23 a.m.—Westminster Avenue—The caller said someone took a catalytic converter from a car between 6:45 and 8 a.m.

Vehicle Burglary—10:34 a.m.—Ironwood Avenue—Someone smashed the rear window of the caller’s car and stole the caller’s sunglasses. Report taken.

Suspicious Circumstances—4:55 p.m.—14th Street—The caller said a woman accompanied by a black Labrador kicked in an apartment door and went inside, shutting the door behind her. The door had a hole in it. Police unit 106 determined that the woman in question was a resident who had locked herself out of the apartment.

Grand Theft Report—6:83 p.m.—Old Ranch Parkway—Someone stole a catalytic converter from a car between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Friday, December 28

Vehicle Burglary—8:11 a.m.—Banyan Avenue—Someone took electronics-related tools and gift cards from a car. Point of entry: a broken lock. The crime apparently occurred between 8 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, and 7 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28. Report taken.

Fraud Report—1:01 p.m.—Emerald Cove Way—Someone used the caller’s credit card to make charges. Report taken.

Petty Theft Report—1:16 p.m.—Dogwood Avenue—Someone stole an iPod from an unlocked car between 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, and 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28.

Petty Theft Report—3:27 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—Someone stole the wreath and snowman off of the caller’s front porch between 10 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, and 2:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 28. The stolen decorations were valued at $200, making the unknown Grinch responsible for the crime guilty of petty theft.

Saturday, December 29

Suspicious Circumstances—4:05 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller, a bank employee, reported an unspecified number of individuals in a van parked out front. They told the bank employee that were there to do work. Bank branch staff called corporate and were informed that corporate had no work scheduled at the branch. The alleged workers entered the bank, walked around and tried some doors inside the bank. They brought a key with them that didn’t work. The caller considered this highly suspicious. Police unit 141 told dispatch that the workers seemed legitimate. However, a work order could not be verified. The workers were told reschedule and leave for the night.

Suspicious Circumstances—5:29 p.m.—Ironwood Avenue—The caller was house sitting. The caller said a man wearing a jacket that said “agent” on the back was looking into the caller’s car with a flashlight. The man knocked on the door of the house that the caller was sitting. Then the man walked away. The caller considered the possibility that the man was a friend of the resident of the house. Police unit 141 contacted the man, who turned out to be a process server. No further police services were necessary.

Check Area—10:30 p.m.—11th Street and Seal—The caller said individuals were lighting bags on the beach and sending them up in the air. The caller thought they might be paper fire lanterns. The eight bags were now hovering over the houses at the end of 11th Street on the berm. Police unit 207 contacted a group off 11th Street and determined there was no fire—just a marriage proposal with Christmas lights. No further police services were necessary. The log did not say if the proposal was accepted.

Sunday, December 30

Suspected Trespassing Report—9:49 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller said that someone appeared to be inside a residence on Ocean Avenue and had started a fire inside. The caller was not sure if the fire was in a fireplace. Police unit 207 found the landlord’s niece staying at the residence. No crime and no trespassing.

Friday, Dec. 28

Disturbance, Family—3:50 p.m.—Howard and Saratoga—The caller reported a man and woman in the front yard having a physical altercation. The female was heard yelling, “Get off of me.” The caller was a neighbor. Patrol contacted two individuals in front of the house, near a vehicle with a smashed window. The argument was mostly verbal between a boyfriend and girlfriend. The registered owner of the car with the smashed window did not want to prosecute. All parties were counseled.

Drunks—10:34 p.m.—Howard and Los Alamitos—The caller said two women wearing black dresses appeared to be drunk and were walking in and out of the street on the west side of Los Alamitos Boulevard. One of the women fell down and the caller was concerned that they may get taken advantage of. Patrol checked both sides of the street, parking lots and bars but was unable to locate the individuals.

Saturday, Dec. 29

Possible Burglary Suspect—8:36 p.m.—Denwood Avenue—The caller said an unknown man came to the caller’s door and started asking questions. The caller said the individual left in an unknown direction, but the caller thought the individual might be casing the neighborhood. The caller could offer no further description and did not want to be contacted. Patrol located the suspect and advised him of required city permits. The individual left the area.

Wednesday, January 2

Suspicious Person—4:57 p.m.— Los Alamitos Boulevard—The caller reported a man in his 20s who appeared to be under the influence. The individual was seen kicking a storage container and talking to the bushes. Patrol contacted the individual, who was a transient. He was cooperative. The individual left the area by bus to meet a friend in Seal Beach.

Stolen Vehicle—9:48 p.m.—Oak Grove Road.

Disturbance, Music—8:39 p.m.—Montecito Road.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—3 p.m.—Druid Lane—The caller said a vehicle dropped a man off and he was now walking around the neighborhood. A deputy contacted a man who fit the suspect’s description.

Vandalism Report—8:01 a.m.—Pemberton Road.

Tuesday, January 1

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—12:03 a.m.—Martha Ann Drive—The caller said someone was tapping on her front door or window.

Disturbance, Music or Party—12:07 a.m.—Montecito Road—A deputy performed a patrol check for individuals who were reportedly banging pots on the ground and screaming at the apartment across from the location.

Wednesday, January 2

Identity Theft—10:57 a.m.—Kempton Drive.

Fraud Report—11:49 a.m.—Harrisburg Road.

Disturbance—1:38 p.m.—Aceca Drive—The caller said two women and a man were outside in a black vehicle. She said they would not leave. However, they apparently left when a deputy arrived.

Vandalism Report—2:31 p.m.—St. Albans Drive.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—4:48 p.m.—Wembley Road—The caller reported a man walking around the campus of Weaver Elementary School, taking pictures of the buildings.

Disturbance—8:43 p.m.—Kensington Road—A deputy detained “a couple” of individuals with what turned out to be air soft guns.

Thursday, January 3

Prowler—12:39 a.m.—Kempton Drive—Someone banged on the caller’s front door five minutes earlier. The caller also heard a noise approximately 20 minutes earlier. The caller was home with her mom. The dog was inside.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—2:31 a.m.—Yellowtail Drive—The caller said a man darted down a side street when the caller drove by.

Abandoned Vehicle—11:11 a.m.—Orangewood Avenue and Wallingsford Road—A brown van with a for sale sign on it had been parked in the area for over five days.

Identity Theft—3 p.m.—Davenport Road.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—4:46 p.m.—Copa De Oro Drive—The caller said a man was going through the trash.

Firework Violation—8:58 p.m.—Blume Drive—A deputy performed a patrol check for three teenage boys who were reportedly detonating fireworks in the park.

Burglary Report—11:15 p.m.—Harrisburg Road—A house sitter found that a residence had been burglarized.
