College Park East will throw a fund-raiser garage sale from 7 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, for the family of five that was displaced by the recent Rose Street fire. In related news, a young woman who was injured in the fire was released from the hospital last week. A spokesman for the family says they dispute initial reports that they were having problems with the heating lamp for a lizard cage. News reports have speculated the lamp might have caused the fire.
“If you have items that you would like to donate please drop them off at the Flores residence between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. the day of the sale,” said Mike Flores. “Items can be dropped off at 4640 Hazelnut Ave. Seal Beach. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the garage sale donations will go towards helping the family. Any questions about the garage sale fund-raiser can be directed to Michael Flores at coachmikeflores@gmail.com.”
The College Park East neghborhood newsletter reports that the Meyers family is accepting donations at 3580 Violet St. The Cervantes family at 3850 Rose St. and Fire Station #48 at 3131 North Gate Rd. are also accepting donations.
Stephani Meyers said people are welcome to drop items off any time between 6 and 7:30 a.m. Anyone who wishes to send the family a check should make the check out to Wendy Bystrom. “In addition, any items remaining at the end of the garage sale will be donated to The Epilepsy Foundation and Goodwill. I’ve arranged both to pick up left over items on Monday morning,” Meyers said.
Meyers—the designated spokesperson for the Rose Street family—says that Farrah Sawyer was released from the burn unit of the hospital last Thursday. She said Sawyer may require a skin graft on at least one of her arms.
Meyers said that “the family disputes that they ever stated the lizard cage was giving them difficulty. The tank was a custom-built, beautiful tank that strongly resembled a high end, large aquarium. They further claim with the excessive heat of recent, they didn’t even have the lights/heater on.”
