Court update: Lewd conduct case preliminary hearing continued to Nov. 20

A preliminary hearing is scheduled to continue on Friday, Nov. 20, that will determine if a former youth sports camp owner will go to trial on charges of sexually abusing a child.

The was set on Aug. 27 and most recently continued on Friday, Oct. 9.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Scott Durzo, who owned a youth sports camp business called the Total Sport Camp, was originally charged Friday, May 9, 2014, with nine felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under age 14.

According to the Orange County Superior Court website, all nine counts were based on an incident that allegedly occurred on May 1, 2005.

Durzo was also charged with seven felony counts of lewd acts upon a child age 14 or 15, one felony count of sodomy with a minor, one felony count of displaying pornography to a minor, and a sentencing enhancement allegation for substantial sexual conduct with a child.

In June 2014, Durzo was released on $250,000 bail.

 

The latest: A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20. The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to determine whether a case will go to trial.

Friday, October 16

Suspicious Vehicle—6:33 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway and First Street—The caller said a woman left a car in the middle of the street and ran toward the beach. The car had hazard lights on. Police unit 107 determined that the car ran out of gas. No further police services were necessary.

Drunk—1:05 p.m.—10th Street and Pacific Coast Highway—The caller reported a man in front of the bus stop, screaming profanities. Police contacted an individual who apparently matched the man’s description. His name was apparently blacked out in the log. Police advised him to keep quiet and he apparently said he would comply.

Municipal Code Complaint—2:53 p.m.—Dolphin Avenue—The caller said people were dumping items in the alley. Police unit 107 determined that the items  were not obstructing the alley. A tenant who was moving would return later to pick them up.

Suspicious Person—3:27 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said a man was holding a pink envelope and was trying to get people to read the envelope. Police unit 107 determined he was a local resident. No further police services were necessary.

Suspicious Person—3:49 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said a man was offering to sell food stamps for cash. The caller suspected the man was drinking beer and phoned again at 4:01 p.m. to report that he was drinking a 40 ounce container of beer. He reportedly put the beer down between two cars before approaching people. He was gone by the time police arrived.

Saturday, October 17

Traffic Stop—1:56 a.m.—Eighth Street and Pacific Coast Highway—Police unit 241 arrested Travis Wood on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Dog—8:36 a.m.—Eighth Street—A citizen reported a Chihuahua mix near Lifeguard Tower #3. Referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services. The citizen called back to report that the dog was being returned to its owner. Message delivered to Animal Care Services.

DUI—11:02 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard and Westminster Avenue—The caller saw a car run a red light. The caller said the car was swerving. The car was impounded and the driver was apparently arrested. Some details, including the name of the arrested individual, were blacked out in the log.

Petty Theft—1:50 p.m.—Island View Drive—The caller’s wallet was taken from an unlocked vehicle. Report taken.

Disturbance, Juvenile—4:48 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller said juveniles were being loud and were skateboarding on a large board they reportedly took from a construction site. Police unit 107 contacted seven individuals and advised them against causing a disturbance. Counseled.

Patrol Check—5:54 p.m.—Lampson Avenue—The caller asked for police to respond to the park because of individuals in the children’s area with dogs where they were not supposed to be. Police unit 206 checked. The park was closed. Log entry.

Suspicious Circumstances—9:52 p.m.—College Park Drive—The caller was driving by and noticed individuals with flashlights and some headlights in the park, possibly a small barbecue fire as well.

The officer in police unit 206 searched the park on foot and determined no police services were necessary.

Traffic Stop—9:54 p.m.—Studebaker and Pacific Coast Highway—Police unit 241 arrested Anthony Mehl on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Battery—10:59 p.m.—10th Street—The caller said a neighbor was drunk and had punched the caller in the face. The neighbor was back at his residence. Additional details were blacked out in the log. Report taken.

Sunday, October 18

Malicious Mischief, Vehicle—8:35 a.m.—10th Street—The caller woke up that morning and found the left front tire of his car slashed. Report taken.

Municipal Code Complaint—10:22 a.m.—Marina Drive and Pacific Coast Highway—The caller complained about too many real estate signs at the location. Ten signs were removed. Matter solved.

Wreckless Driving—1:39 p.m.—Rose and Lampson—The caller said a car was going at approximately 60 m.p.h. The car was parked now, but the caller wanted an officer to advise the driver if possible. Police unit 106 contacted the registered owner of the car and he denied driving it.

Found Property—5:26 p.m.—Central Avenue—A citizen found a wallet and dropped it off at the fire station. The caller asked for a police unit to pick it up. But the owner’s identification was found in the wallet. The owner was contacted and that individual agreed to pick it up that afternoon. Matter solved.

Monday, October 19

Disturbance—2:12 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—Police unit 207, while on patrol, observed what appeared to be a disturbance and contacted two individuals. The officer assigned to the unit requested an additional unit. Following a field interview with the two individuals, police determined that it was a verbal fight only.

IN LEISURE WORLD

Friday, October 16

Petty Theft Report—3:29 p.m.—Canoe Brook Drive—The crime apparently took place between 2 and 2:40 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15. Someone took a bike from the caller’s carport. Report taken.

Possible DUI—10:29 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard and St. Andrews Drive—The caller said the driver of a car was hitting curbs and revving his engine while traveling northbound on Seal Beach Boulevard. At 10:33 p.m., the car entered Leisure World and did not have any issues after that. According to the log, it was possible the driver was just elderly. The caller had described the driver as appearing to be 60 years old. Police determined no further law enforcement services were necessary.

IN LOS ALAMITOS

Friday, October 2

Disturbance—3:56 p.m.—Katella Avenue—The caller reported that a man came to the office claiming to be someone’s husband and requested a woman’s room number. The caller then phoned the woman’s room and she told the caller she did not want her husband to know where she was located. She did not advise the caller what was going on, but the husband knew she was there because he asked the caller to get approval to get the room number. After the caller placed the call, the male left saying, “I knew it,” multiple times. Patrol contacted the man and his wife. They checked out OK.

Aggressive Dog Out—5:20 p.m.—Walnut Street—The caller reported that two houses south of his location, a dog with a history of being aggressive and biting the mailman was out with the gate open. Patrol closed the gates, but were unable to locate the dog, which was running around the neighborhood.

Missing Adult—8:33 p.m.— Katella Avenue—The caller reported a missing adult male resident at the facility was last seen at 5 p.m. with his sister, but the sister did not sign him out. Staff searched the facility and he was nowhere to be found. His sister was called but there was no answer right away. When she did answer she was asked to come to the facility. She and the man returned after a trip to Costa Mesa, and she said she had no idea she couldn’t take him without signing out. Staff members were going to advise her of the facility rules. She and the man returned while patrol was present.

Saturday, October 3

Disturbance—7:29 p.m.—Los Alamitos Boulevard— The caller reported there were two men on the street in front of the supermarket harassing people as they walked by. Store management also called police and reported that the two men were now on foot, headed toward Boondocks bar. Patrol was unable to locate them.

Sunday, October 4

Person Down—3:54 p.m.—Katella Avenue—The caller reported a man down in the planters in front of the restaurant. The caller said he was breathing and attempted to wake him, but he did not move. Patrol contacted the man and his mother. He appeared to be intoxicated. He was released into the custody of his father. Assisted.

Petty Theft—7:50 a.m.—Bostonian Drive—Three stepping stones valued at $30 were stolen from the caller’s front yard.
