College Park West View – 11/26/2009

Residents of College Park West: Most everyone in College Park West knows me.  I am an original owner in College Park West since December 1965.

I was asked by The Sun Editor, Dennis Kaiser, to keep an up date on what is happening in our small area of Seal Beach.  With your help, we can write a weekly article and let everyone in Seal Beach know that we are not step children, but tax paying law abiding citizens of the community.

If you are interested in this article, please slip a note in my suggestion box with your information or e-mail me at-   candhcohen@roadrunner.com

In a recent edition of the Sun newspapers, there was an article about the meeting and the proposal at the intersection of College Park West and Studebaker road.  I will write an overview of what was said and you can read it in this or the next issue.

This is yourchance to speak up and let everyone know what your feeling are about College Park West.  I was thinking of a name for the article, The Weswtener or the Tattler, but your suggestions are welcome.  Thank you for your input and help.

Intersection improvememnt meeting

A public meeting was held at Edison Park on November 7, 2009 to discuss the improvement options at the intersection of College Park Drive and Studebaker Road.

In attendance was Michael Ho city engineer, David Sloan Mayor Pro-tem, David Carmany City Manager, Vince Mastrosimone Public Works Director, Gina Philips and Brian Warner Chamber of Commerce members and approximately 50 concerned residents of College Park West.  A company called Wildan Engineering was hired by the City of Seal Beach to gather data and cost in their finding on this project.  Their results are as follows.

1.  Conceptual Signalized Intersection, cost $760,400

2.  Conceptual non-signalized intersection, cost $324,500

3.  Intersection- Right turn only (College Park Dr), U-turn allowed at N. Studebaker Road and Studebaker Road, cost $1,100,0000

4.  Conceptual Roundabout, cost $930,000

After much discussion, the results were for concept number 1.  A suggestion was also made with regards to this proposal, which included an additional lane to be built leading directly onto College Park Drive.  If this proposal is accepted, College Park West Residents and Long Beach Residents won’t have to wait for the signal and can drive directly onto College Park Drive and Salida Avenue.  A meeting will be scheduled between the Department of California Transportation (Caltrans), Long Beach and Orange County Transit Authority to finalize the options in the near future.  I will keep you posted as soon as I hear any new information.

Updated information on laws concerning canines

You can license your pet at the Long Beach Animal Care Center 7700 E. Spring Street, Long Beach. Telephone number (562) 570-7387. Excessive barking is a violation of the Long Beach municipal code.  Dog tags are required to be warn on your dog at all times.  Animal control will follow up with a notice of complaint letter and give the resident 10 days to take care of the problem.  Dogs are not permitted on any of the beaches in LB or Seal Beach unless there is a sign posted for a specific designated area.

Owners are legally responsible for any injury caused by their dogs.  No person shall keep, own or harbor any dog in the city for more than 30 days unless the dog has been inoculated with a rabbis vaccine.

No person shall allow a dog to be upon any public street, park or other public place unless the dog is secured to a leash not more than eight feet in length.  This section does not apply to an area that is in a fenced dog exercise area of a city park or approved area.

Section 16.200 NOTE:  no person shall permit their animal to defecate on any public sidewalk, park building or any private property unless such person removes the defecation and puts it in a proper trash receptacle.

In simple terms,”scoop the poop.” I know a lot of us that walk our dogs abide by these laws, but when you walk you dog, carry an extra litter bag for the person that doesn’t have one.

This will help keep our properties cleaner with less fly and bug problems.  If it is trash day, it is OK to put the doggie bag in your neighbors trash can that is in the street for collection pick up.  I know this is a lot of information, but if you only acknowledge one or two things I wrote, than it was a worthwhile article.
